I have two AB800s and was wondering is there a certain position to place the lights or is it simply trial and error? |

There are certain positions, but they are still trial and error. Main light left or right at 45 degrees to subject, fill light opposite at similar angle if you wanna eliminate shadows. However, if you wanna light the background, make the fill light a background light and use a reflector for fill.
Good portraits need diffusion for main and fill. |

Trial & error, lol can you imagine doing a hundred portraits a month and having to guess where the lights should be? Have a look at webphotoschool.com, it will help.
By the way, you've posted a lot of threads about your lights and what to do with them, yet you never thank the people who go out of their way to offer you answers to your questions... that may not sit well with some people.

Two AB800s... went a bit for overkill, didn't ya? ;-)
First step, give your subject a radiation suit... LOL
Seriously, nards is right on the money. You're probably not gonna be able to run the ABs at full power though. I'd try starting at 1/2 power, that still might be too much. But you can start playing now, just chimp your shots and look at the histograms between shots.
Set shutter speed to 1/125 and aperture to f/11 to start and then mess with exposure by adjusting aperture.
Next step, get and learn to use a flash meter.

I meant it was trial and error LEARNING how to set them up :) Once ya learn, you'll know. Even with a book, you are gonna HAVE to do a little trial and error to make your setup work like the book.
Sorry, din't mean to be unclear (or is that nuclear???)
Need more beer.

Also, mentioning //www.strobist.com for info relating to positioning might be helpful. Check out the piece on 'reverse engineering' lighting setups from other's images. |

:) It means a lot to those of us who try to help many people, often answering the same questions again and again and again. It helps to know our efforts are appreciated.

Handy tip - pay the $10 for one month, then print all of the lessons to read at your leisure. :)
