I'm gonna rant a little bit here...
Am I the only one that thinks this challenge subject is ripe for other interpretation? What if your subject is not a single object but rather the scene as a whole - or more directly - the balance of the things in the scene - lights and darks, colors and tones? Cant you essential fill the frame with damn dear anything?
I certainly dont expect voters to see my point of view, and I'll submit my entry just out of a desire to see what sort of reactions its gonna get. Most likely I'll pull a 4 if I'm lucky. I dont expect open mindedness in votes or comments.
I feel the idea of fill the frame is rather pointless in itself - as a photographer, I fill every frame with what I want to see, and the image and relationship between what I've chosen to photograph is what makes the image. Sometimes the subject is easily determined. Other times its not so much about ONE thing. Photos and imagery can portray emotive qualities and sometimes THAT is the subject. The test, for me anyway, is this: does the photo succeed if one of the parts were removed or must it be taken as a single "whole presentation"? Out of the box and open minded - sure. Gonna get votes at DPC - nope, not likely.
my two cents - maybe less depending on exchange rates. |

I am so gonna get hammered by voters, but I like it, so I don't care.

The phrase "fill the frame" started as an instructional one for learning photographers. It was to remind them to step closer, get in tighter, etc. You are correct that every photographic frame is filled with something -- but that isn't really the spirit of this challenge description. In my humble opinion, of course.

I feel the same way and had a shot entered with the idea that the scene WAS the subject but did something better today. I know people will vote it down and when you say the scene is the subject they will say that it isn't in the spirit of the challenge and you should have chosen a different subject. |

I'm in 2 minds as to what to do....
I like my shot (probably the only person who will!) but it only fills about 85% of the frame, with the rest just a plain background. I can use the time that's left to re-edit and make it fill the frame 100%, but IMO it just doesn't work quite as well like this. So, do I leave it as it is and hope that 85% is 'filled' enough to keep voters happy? Or, do I re-edit to 100%, but end up with an image that doesn't look quite as good?
Help me out here folks...please :)

Not all styles of photography are going to score high in certain challenges. Even though I seem to keep forgetting this I realized a while back that to score well in challenges (not just produce a great photo) you have to submit a great photo that fits the style of photography that the challenge indicates.
While the entire contents of your photo may be your subject, this challenge seems to be calling for a subject to fill the frame and voters will be looking for THIS STYLE and probably voting accordingly. |

That is always the tough decision, make sure that your photo completely meets the challenge even if it is an edit you wouldn't ever do, or leave what you think is a better overall photograph. In this case i think you may get alot of low votes for it. I don't see alot of voters being very liberal on the challenge description. Just my opinion though. |

There is a very strong chance Many people will hate mine so I may have the brown ribbon or at the very least the most 1 votes. |

Hmmm...it seems that most of us are heading for the brown...this could be the lowest scoring challenge yet.

I was dissappointe din myself for not coming up with some cool creative way to create an image utilizing the expert rule set. So instead I have a boring image. I hope to see some cool stuff cause there sure aint gonna be one on my update column. |

I thought you took heaps of images and were going to blend 6 of them...or maybe I read wrong.

When I look at the images I see some that don't fill the frame very well. Compositionally the subject IS in all parts of the frame but the description says "nothing but the subject" should be in the photo. I do however think that a bit of flexability is appropriate because if you're photographing an irregularly-shaped subject then it won't be the only thing in a rectangular frame.
One way to get around that would be macros but I think that since we have specific macro challenges it wouldn't be so fun if most people went that way for this challenge.
edit for clarity
