I'm waiting on this money ($1176.00) and was thinking about upgrading back to a DSLR since I will finally be able to get some studio lighting in a few more months. I had a rebel before but i bought everything used in a bundle. I used to have one of those 300 mm lenses but i dont really think i need one of those. I definitly want a canon and i was thinking about the Rebel XTI.

So what I need to know is what lenses to buy? I want a macro lens and a good lens for portraits and stock photos. I also want a remote.

XTi body @ Buydig is $693. A decent dedicated macro lens is gonna be about $300-400 and so is decent portrait/stock lens. Something like the Tamrom 28-75 F2.8. You may need to add a few more bucks.

Personally C B, I'd go with a Rebel XT over the XTi and spend even more on lenses.

For portraits, it is hard to beat the Canon 50mm f/1.8 mkII. A great little lens and perhaps the least expensive quality lens you will ever buy. I do a lot of my stock photos with that lens too.

Do you have anything to shoot wide angle? I would pick a wide angle lense before a macro lense.

cool, so what do you know what type of macro? i would check out your portraits but you have a reputation around here and I AM at work soooo.....i'll have to check them out later LOL.

For a Macro lens the Canon 100mm f/2.8 is absolutely amazing. I am in love with that lens. It NEVER disappoints!

Well worth the $$...around $450.

I agree wwith those who favor the XT over the XTi in this case. You'll want a good general purpose lens, and definitely the 50/1.8 as well. You can do macro with the 50/1.8 with extension tubes, and that's the way I'd go. You'll get very good results, and stay within budget. A good dedicated macro lens will put you over the top, and it's more important to address your needs for normal shooting.
The suggested Tamron 28-75 would be a great choice, but will leave you wanting on the wide end. If you can pick up the kit lens, that will serve reasonably well to give you the 18-28mm range.

so are you saying i should buy just the body and get the lenses separate? or do they have kits that include the 50/1.8 with extension tubes and Tamron 28-75?

He is saying get the XT kit with the 18--55(?) lens then buy the 50mm and Tamron 28-75. Plus get some extension tubes for macro. Sounds like a great plan to me.

Great combo package recommendation... that's what I have and it quite honestly will suffice for my needs until I can shell out the money to go wide (10-22) or go long (70-200 f2.8 IS) .

Surprised that people are recommending that the buyer gets both the 18-55 and the tamron 28-75. Maybe the buyer should just get the tamron 17-50 2.8, optically very similar to the 28-75 and then maybe buy a 70-200 4L used.

A good lens for portraits and macro would be a 50mm f/2.5 or 60mm f/2.8 macro.

For portrait use, on the XT or XTi, they'd give you an equivalent shooting distance as a 80mm or 96mm lens.

I'm very thankful for you guys helping me but I cant find these macro extension tubes you are talking about. I typed in the lenses also and I cant find anything.

I found this , is it what you are talking about?

ok so if it comes with the 18-55mm kit what is the 55mm f/1.8 for? Do I need both?

Well, the 50mm 1.8 is an awesome portrait lens, as well as being a great lens to do macro work with (with the extension tubes). It's a really sharp lens. You'll just love it :-)
