I just got my SB800 as an addition to my SB600.
I want to fire both wireless, using the on-camera flash as commander.
Does anyone here know to make one fire at a different output. I want to use the 800 as main and 600 as fill flash.
I know that with the 800 on camera I can use it as a master and thus control the 600 as slave, but can the 800 work as a wireless master?

I only have 2 SB600s, but in my case I use the zoom on each to control output else reflectors, brollys, tissue, etc.

Thanks for the tip guroos. One does get some control over the units like that. I just wish there was a way for for the units to communicate with each other without me having to fork over another load of cash to get a SU-800 controller unit.

the d70 won't really control more than one group, so you'd have to set both flashes to manual and dial in the amount of flash you wanted from each.

both have to be set to group a channel 3, if i remember correctly...

yep, both have to be on 3A and no you cannot control them independently on camera.

to control them independently on camera you'd need to either use your SB-800, and su-800 commander or a D200.

I have an sb-800 and 2 sb600s and it's an awesome set up. Now I want even more though! ;)

How do I do that? if I set them on manual and off camera, what will then fire them?

Just under the option to set them as a remote unit there is an option called SU-4 (I think) which means they just work as a traditional slave unit - they see a flash and fire at whatever power you have set it at. I use this option a lot more than the remote option because there is no preflash.

Or a D80.

once you've set both of them to be remote, you can change the group and channel. i believe the default is 3A, so unless you've changed them before, that's all you have to do. just set the d70 to wireless commander mode and you're all set.

if you're stuck and really need detailed instructions to set all 3, PM me and i'll get mine out and post a full walk-through...

as requested... (hopefully this makes sense)

sb-600 :

turn it on
hold [zoom] and [-] for a couple seconds
use [+] or [-] to move through the menu until you see one of a curved arrow (kinda like a z shape)
use [mode] to make this say ON
push the power button
hit [mode] to select between GROUP and CH and use [-] and [+] to select A and 3 respectively

sb-800 :

turn it on
hold [sel] for a couple of seconds
use the arrows to move around the menu until you're on the icon that looks like 2 z-shaped arrows (top right)
hit [sel]
use [+] and [-] to choose REMOTE
hit [sel] (it should now have a triangle pointing to REMOTE)
hit [on/off]
hit [sel] to select between GROUP and CH and use [-] and [+] to select A and 3 respectively

d70 :

turn it on
hit [menu]
move to the settings menu (the pencil)
move down to item 19 (Flash Mode) and hit the right arrow
move down to Commander mode and hit the right arrow
choose TTL (Through The Lens mode), AA (aperture mode), or M (manual)
On M, you can choose the power level to a specific level and hit right arrow to set it there... i'd choose TTL for most instances...

hope this helps...

Thanks for the reply. I understand this procedure, but how does this help me achieve different output on the twp units. Whatever mode I'm in (TTL or M) it will still send the same set of instructions to both units .
I was looking for a way to fire them in different outputs...

Different question now...I just found an old SB-15 that still works fine and am wondering if there is any way of integrating this unit into my system without extra shopping involved?
