OK, I've got over 90 minutes on my home profile without a crash. One problem I have is if I create a new user I'm not quite sure how to get it access to my work network. Oh, I wish I had taken a few computer classes in undergrad instead of those photography electives.
What's the best way to compare what's being run under each profile? msconfig? and just compare all the tabs?

I've run Vista on my laptop for a short period of time, and I like it... in general. It is bulkier, as DrAchoo mentions. My biggest issue with it right now (oddly enough, given this thread) is driver support. The OEMs just aren't on top of drivers yet. |

Actually, I'd say it's geekier.

I'm not too sure but I'd suggest creating a new profile before you delete the current one. That way you don't get into a situation where nothing works anymore. As for accessing your work network, you may need to talk to your IT people about that one.

Ya, I'm going on 4-5 hours so far and no crashes. It's something with the work profile. I'll try to create a new one tomorrow and see if I can figure out the network. We don't have IT people on-site (obviously) and there's still going to be a lot of snow on the ground tomorrow so I doubt they will want to come out.
I really have actually wanted to reload windows. Dell has a system restore where it wipes it back to the original state. One question, have people had good success with Windows XP's Files and Settings transfer wizard to off-load and re-onload data? |

OK, all bets are off. I got a crash on my home profile. Same error. The event viewer is now "corrupt" and didn't let me look at anything. |

BTW - Sorry about all your misfortunes with electronic equipment.

Sounds like a reinstall or similar then :(

I ran some physical diagnostics and the DST short status test (which I guess looks at the hard drive) failed. it didn't fail the first time I ran this this afternoon. I wonder if that is the issue. |

While you're running diagnostics, check your memory (MemTest). The pool error and randomly corrupt apps suggests memory more than anything else.

Try replacing the memory modules, one by one, and test the individual RAM chips. (Am I repeating myself? Well, the mind is the SECOND thing to go!!)
Keep us posted!!! :-) |

Well this sounds easier said than done. I have been wanting to upgrade the RAM anyway, so I wouldn't mind going out and buying another stick of RAM, but with the snow on the ground, I doubt I'm going to get somewhere that happens to have a 1GB RAM stick that fits a Dell laptop.

I'm gonna run the computer in safe mode today and see if it still happens. If it does, I'll assume it's a hardware issue and then go after the RAM and, gulp, the hard drive (how ugly will that be?).

Usually when my computer crashes it's got something to do with quicktime...
Anyways i'd suggest you reinstall windows, or do a windows repair. Make sure you don't format the drives, just install over the existing version. |

Just a quick thought. You are using XP right? Did you recently add Service Pack 2? When I added it my machine went ape, had to uninstall it. Without SP2 mine works fine. Might help.
Never had any problems with RAM causing a BSoD, not saying it can't happen, never has yet in all the years I've been building and using PCs. |

No, I've had SP2 for ages.
So the update is that I have been running in Safe Mode with no issue for about 4 hours. If I make it the rest of the day without a crash in safe mode I am going to:
a) reseat my RAM (just in case)
b) try a repair of windows XP
c) reload windows
That's the plan anyway...

Sounds like a good plan, although I would skip steps a & b, and go straight to c |

C is such a pain in the ass to the uninitiated that it's worth a few steps to try to avoid.

DrAchoo, clear what you want off the hard drive. Then, put your XP disk in, it will ask you if you want to reload XP, say yes. It will ask if you want to reformat, say yes.
Sit back and watch. Then load your apps back on one by one.
That's it. 45 minutes of thumb twiddling, then loads of discs in and out of drive to load up. And, that is that. |

Let's see... you forgot:
4 hours of reloading apps.
4 hours of resetting preferences for apps.
1 hour getting back on the network
1 hour getting the windows updater
2 hours getting the actual updates.
10 hours of worrying that I forgot to back something up and am losing data...

Don't worry about all that, it's part of PCs. Have a few beers while doing it, then it all merges into a blur. |

Got your Windows XP CD handy?
Run c:\windows\system32\sfc /scannow
SFC (system file checker) is a ut that has shipped with all flavors of Windows that checks the System Files and puts them back right if any of them have been goofed up by whatever.
It will prompt for your XP CD if it finds issues.
