Anyone care to share any tips on using Photomatix to create HDR images? I took the original RAW shot and have ran it through Raw Shooter Essentials to create a +2 exposure as well as a -2 exposure. I've used Photomatix to combine the three and have used tone mapping to adjust the image. The image that I've done this too is in my portfolio.

Can anyone have a peak and offer some suggestions on what I might be doing wrong? I've seen some really outstanding images with very intense skies etc., but my shot seems to be lacking.

Thanks!

It's an interesting shot. What it's "missing" is the subtle gradations. +2, 0, -2 is HUGE steps. Try this; do a new HDR on it using +2, +1.5, +1, +0.5, 0, -0.5, -1, -1.5, -2 and tone map THAT.

Also experiment with laying the +2 TIFF on top of the tone mapped version, and setting the layer mode to "lighten", then watch what happens as you fade the layer opacity. Ditto the -2 exposure, set to "darken" mode, and so forth.

You can accomplish a LOT of interesting detail work by merging straight TIFF files with Tone mapped files in various layer modes. You can learn a lot about HDRI but looking at the differences between HDRI images generated from the same extremes but with more (or fewer) interim steps.
