My Canon S2 has been sitting around collecting dust lately. This weekend I wanted to take it on a hike rather then the XT (smaller lighter, easier...), I put new batteries in it and it said "change the batteries." I put another new set of batteries in and it did the same thing. (note it takes AA batteries)
The camera has taken a beating in it's life as it had been my hiking camera for awhile, getting bumped and being in harsh environments. The lens has made a ticking noise as it extended the last few times I've used it so I knew it's time was limitied.
I hadn't had time to mess with it at all, but I did check the contacts and they were all clean and free of obstruction. Any other advice on what to check or is it now time to get the S3 for my portable camera?
And for what it's worth, I was glad I ended up taking the XT on the hike as I got a few keepers!

| just out of curiousity... why not just bring the xt on the hikes. Then you can just get a canon elph or something really small as your cammera for when you dont want to carry a camera around. |

Thanks Scalvert!
Ham, to get the same range and macro ability on hikes with the XT I need to bring 3 lens, or sacrafice something. Plus, some of the hikes I go on are a little rough and long to be carrying a couple thousand dollars worth of camera gear. I usually do bring the XT now, but sometimes I prefer having the smaller camera. And, when I'm hiking, most of the time I'm a hiker first. No time for a tripod or to take photos of everything, so no need to carry a lot of fancy gear.
Edit to add: I tried it with charged NIMH, but then tried it with new out of the box alkalines as well and it did the same thing? I haven't tried it in playback mode.

| I'm with you LoudDog I take my Canon PowerShot S45 on hikes as we normally have a bit of a scramble when we out in the hills or when we go mountain biking |
