I have been asked to sell a photograph to Birding Magazine, the editor asked for a file of (ca. 1mb). What does that mean? I hate to appear to be ignorant to someone that I don't know, so I came here first. Thanks in advance. |

1mb? Wouldn't that be huge? |

Quite the opposite. Most files from a digital camera are well over 2mb.

I believe that "ca." is being used here to abbreviate for "circa" Latin meaning around, about or approximately. So I would venture that the editor wants a file approximately 1 mb, give or take a little....but you might want to ask. (By the way, ca. is more appropriately used with dates than amounts, but it's not the first time Latin has been mangled. ;-) |

I think you may be best asking for clarification on exactly what he wants. A 1MB file could be anything.
It would be useful to know what sort of pixel count he's after, what type of file, what quality, etc. |

Magazine photo editors are generally of the mind that the higher the resolution, the better chance they have of making something look nice on their glossy pages. Maybe he meant "megapixel" file as opposed to a puny 72dpi web graphic? Regardless, I think you can assume that he's going to want the largest image (pixel dimensions) that you can possibly come up with. |

i shoot large-fine and my native files are 2.5-4.5 mb (depends on lighting, etc).
for newspapers, i typically size the images to 200dpi, 12" on the longest side, and save as jpg-10. this usually brings the files to .8-1.3 mb.
for magazines, i typically size the images to 300dpi, 12" on the longest side, and save as jpg-12. this usually produces files of 5-8 mb.
just to keep from pulling your hair out, simply follow up and inquire as to the dimensions of the file.
congrats! |
