Is the XTi that much better than the XT? It seems that it would be, as it's a newer model, but I just wanted to get some opinions.

side by side

To me not really worth the price difference unless the extra 2mp are a must. There are a few more differences, you can view at the above link.
Hope this helps

I'd tend to agree. The only other real benefits are the sonic dust cleaner and a faster continuous drive buffer.

The removal of the small LCD for settings actually annoys me about the XTi. Having to power the full LCD just to see your f-stop and other little settings seems kind of dumb.

Thanks for the link. I couldn't figure it out last night.

I was going to buy an XTi, but I've decided against it. There is not really any kind of difference between the two. The megapixel difference will be unnoticable (as I don't make posters out of my pictures).

Thanks again!

I̢۪ve had the opportunity to work with both, I purchased the XT from Costco, after 2 months my flash would not pop up, and I returned it, and for a few dollars more I got the Xti.
The differences.
1) LCD screen. I notice you take mostly stills, I on the other hand like action shots, and the at a glance larger LCD is invaluable, for stills it is probably not enough to make a difference.
2) Dust cleaning. I have had dust on censers on my XT, I like the feeling of security, (if only in my own mind) it provides.
3) I hope to eventually sell photos, more MP higher quality.
The XT got me to the Xti, I would never go back and I will look for similar features when I upgrade. But that̢۪s me..

Well, I guess all the extra features that the XTi has isn't enough to warrant the extra bucks. I've seen a lot about the 300D. Anyone have experience with this camera?

The 300D is the original Rebel (non-XT)... at this point, it's not worth buying new.

Still pretty good and it's going to be cheaper than anything else out there right now. The only downside is that it's older technology. You lose the ETTL2 function amongst other things. It's slightly larger than the XT as well. If I were you, I'd go for the XT ($510 on newegg right now) and not the XTi. I made that decision a few months back and don't regret it at all. The XTi doesn't have enough upgrades to warrant the extra $200 in my opinion.

And unless you have the firmware hack like mine did, it has a lot of useful features locked out. Not even sure you can get a Rebel 300D new anymore.

The XT is a great camera.

And some of the technology in it (eg the sensor cleaner) aren't field tested enough to satisfy my skepticism that it won't break in the field.

Sam - what is the significance of the ETTL2 function?

fotoman - what kind of features does the firmware hack enable?

*edit*
Sam - is the ETTL 2 function on the newer Canon models that huge of an advancement?

Second Curtain sync, flash exposure compensation, ISO 3200 (not advisable), mirror lockup, flash snyc speed in Av mode, AF mode (although AI servo doesn't work). Other features - voids your warranty :-)

I say ISO 3200 is not advisable, because the Rebel suffers significant noise at ISO 800.

This is my biggest gripe right now about the XT. I returned it and had it fixed (still under warranty) but after 2 months of usage the problem persisted. I think it's already past warranty now so I guess I'll just deal with it. I dont use flash much but it would be nice to have a fully functional camera :) Other than that, I am very happy with my XT.

I'm not sure that it's that huge of an advancement, but it's definitely a decent one. ETTL2 (correct me if I'm wrong) uses distance information from the lens to properly calculate flash exposure. Although this does require a compatible lens, it is definitely a proven technology and is (in my opinion) more important than a dust cleaner that a lot of people say doesn't work anyway.

Oh and another feature that the 350D has over the 300D is the noise performance. ISO 800 is still a very usable setting on the 350D.

get the 350D (XT), and put the saved money towards a top walk-around lens so that you don't have to change lenses often - by far the best way to kee dust off your sensor.

I loved my 300D.. But I needed faster frames per second and megapixels.. And I also wanted to stop feeling like a soccer mom.
