Hello, all. For those of you that belong to a camera club could you tell me a little bit about how it's run?

I have a survey set up here: SURVEY

The reason I'm asking is that I currently belong to two clubs. One is 30 miles south, the other 25 miles east.

One is barely surviving. It went from being an active club that collected dues and had elected officers, to dropping all of it. A few of us still meet (5-10 of us) each month but don't have any agenda. Some show a few photos and then we just chit chat about photography. The money that was collected all those years sits idle. Half of it was donated to a new art venture in town and we still have several (five?) thousand in the bank.

The other club I belong to is mostly older men who enjoy shooting macros of flowers and fungi and some landscapes. They, for the most part, use film, and though they don't shun the digital users, you can tell they still aren't fully accepting of it. They will ask photogs, "So, what did you do to that in Photoshop? Are those colors the actual colors?" etc. There's nothing wrong with their age, what they use or what they shoot...several of us are just looking for something different. They are very organized and usually have good topics and I may stay in the group, but I would like to have other options as well.

A few of us are in the process of discussing starting our own local club. We have some of our own ideas already but are wondering what others think.

So, if you belong to a club, I would love to hear about it. If you don't belong to a club and still have thoughts on what your ideal club would be, just leave note them in the comment field (last question).

Thanks so much!!

Link doesn't seem to work...

DPC has to serve as my camera club; no time to attend meetings with the kiddies :)

Your camera club experience sounds very similar to mine and we've turned our club around quite a bit this year so I'd like to respond. I'm headed out for a bit but if I forget to check back, please PM me with a reminder!

Ah, I hadn't seen the survey before I posted here so I think I said everything I wanted to say on that. :)

My company has a few internal clubs. There is a main club with some ancillary groups called, "SIGs" (Special Interest Groups). For example, there is a specific "Nikon" group.

Everything is virtual and those at corporate headquarters, as well as those in specific regions of the world, sometimes have impromptu weekend outings to a local place or area. If an employee is traveling to HQ or to another office somewhere, often they will post a message to the clubs' mailing list ahead of time to ask for recommended places to go, or to request that anyone interested could join them for a shooting session.

The mailing list has plenty of activity and all messages are photography related. The demographics of the members range from pure digital photogs, to film users and developers; from beginners that don't have a DSLR yet, to semi-pro photographers.

Thanks to everyone who responded! I received 20 replies full of information and ideas. I've placed the responses into an html file in case you'd like to get some ideas for yourself.

Here's the link: Camera Club Survey RESPONSES

Thank you again! We're meeting tomorrow to discuss the club. This has been so helpful already.
