My daughter has made a 40 page photo book at Shutterfly and wants to put the order in while there's a sale. So we've asked this of Shutterfly but in case they are slow to answer, I thought I'd ask here.
A couple of the photos she has put up are going to be full page -- approximately 8x8. In each case, Shutterfly tells her she has enough resolution to print it at 16x20 (the minimum cropped dimensions she's using is just under 1600x1200, so they're a bit liberal with that).
The problem is that in their preview mode, some of those photos are very soft and show jpeg artifacts. When we blow up the original on the local computer, there's no problem even much larger. They are sharp, and while there's some digital noise in dark areas, there's no blotchiness and they are pretty sharp.
But we want to be careful before ordering a 40 page book (around $40 plus shipping). Has anyone ordered one of these before? Are the previews accurate? Are they rebuilding each photo from the original size in the preview (reducing), or are they just pixel enlarging the existing preview to fit the size you are displaying, i.e., just to help you compose the page?
Thanks in advance!
Neil
