My daughter has made a 40 page photo book at Shutterfly and wants to put the order in while there's a sale. So we've asked this of Shutterfly but in case they are slow to answer, I thought I'd ask here.

A couple of the photos she has put up are going to be full page -- approximately 8x8. In each case, Shutterfly tells her she has enough resolution to print it at 16x20 (the minimum cropped dimensions she's using is just under 1600x1200, so they're a bit liberal with that).

The problem is that in their preview mode, some of those photos are very soft and show jpeg artifacts. When we blow up the original on the local computer, there's no problem even much larger. They are sharp, and while there's some digital noise in dark areas, there's no blotchiness and they are pretty sharp.

But we want to be careful before ordering a 40 page book (around $40 plus shipping). Has anyone ordered one of these before? Are the previews accurate? Are they rebuilding each photo from the original size in the preview (reducing), or are they just pixel enlarging the existing preview to fit the size you are displaying, i.e., just to help you compose the page?

Thanks in advance!

Neil

I've ordered several (8)of them and never had a problem with resolution on any. I will say, however, when I was ordering holiday cards for clients, one of my orders kept looking pixelated no matter how I uploaded it. I knew the file resolution was okay, so I finally just ordered anyway and the printed cards were perfect, no distortion at all. So...... I think their flash-driven site funks up some of the previews, but if you know your file resolution is okay, then don't worry, it should print fine. (in my experience)

I ordered one of these for my mother for Christmas. It was the 12 X 12. On the preview the full page pictures just didn't look right. I e-mailed them and they stated that it was something with there preview and as long as the dimentions where right for what they recommended it would work out fine or else they would print me a new one. We ordered it and it came out wonderful. The pictures where perfect.

My mother loved the book!!!
