Hi everyone,
I just got a free UV filter with my new Canon f2.8 200mm L IS USM lens :-0 , i've already got the same filter and was wondering how i can tell which one will be better. All i can see from the boxes is one is Jessops Skylight 1A and one is Hoya UV(N)HMC.
Anyone got an idea?
Thanks Jim |

What are you using your UV filter for? Is it for 'protection' of your lens? There have been a couple of threads on this and many recommend that you forego the UV filter and just do a better job protecting the lens (lenscap and hood). Unless you have a really good filter or a specific reason for the filter, it probably does more harm to the quality of your photos than good for your lens.
just my 2 cents

| Stick with the Hoya filter, its better quality glass than the other. As for doing more harm than good, is leaving off the filter worth the cost of repairing or even replacing the lens. Leave the UV filter on, its much cheaper in the long run and with the Hoya you aren't loosing any quality. |

It's for sports on this lens. I'm not really a filter man but i've been given one of these twice now with a lens purchase and just thought it might stop the lenses getting scratched and wondered which would would disturb the image least. |

I think I'll stick with your idea, thanks. |

Hoya UV(N)HMC. The HMC is a 7-layer lens and hoya is a good brand.

Are you so sure?
Filter Flare Factor
If you are shooting where debris is flying around, sure, go ahead and use one, otherwise, leave it off and use the hood.
