Stats based on one (or maybe even 100 here) example doesn't really "show" anything.

What is clear without any calculations at all is that any significant change to the scoring/voting system would essentially make all past challenges incomparable witht he later ones.

People have been suggesting ways to "fix" the voting system for over 600 challenges now, and I just don't think it's necessary or that it's going to happen.

I agree.

I don̢۪t think the voting system is the problem; it̢۪s the commenting on why you voted the way you did. Let me explain, all these thread get posted because photographers don̢۪t understand why they received a certain vote and voters don̢۪t want to comment because the think some photographers may retaliate by sending a PM or posting in a thread. So most low votes and some high votes post with no comment.

My solution to this (in theory) is not to make it mandatory to comment if you vote low or high but have a system in place where if you are three or more points of the final average at the end of a challenge then you will be sent an email by the site.

This email will ask you if you would like to comment on the votes so that the photographer could see why you voted the way you did. The email asking you to comment would give you a choice to comment or not and if you do comment it would be sent to the photographers photograph like it is currently done, but it would be anonymous. In other words all comments provided because your vote was three or more points lower or higher than the final average of a photo entry would not show the username of the voter.

I believe this would provide honest comments on low or high votes while giving the voter the option to comment anonymously.

What do you think?

Unfortunately, I think that that would be unfair on those who like to vote a bit differently, rather than actually gathering comments from the masses.

I really don't think that you can coerce people into giving comments in any way without affecting how voting happens. If people feel that giving a certain vote is going to expose them to some kind of system, they might be disinclined to vote their normal way. That's unfair.

Let me take this a bit further.

Say for example, under your suggested system, I vote a 10 on a photo that comes in first place, average 7. I don't have to comment, even though I gave an extreme mark. The only reason that I don't have to comment is because lots of other people "agreed" with me that that photo was good.

At the other side, I give a 1 to a photo that comes in last place, 3 points average. Under your system, I don't have to give any comment, even though my vote blasted that photo out of the water.

I dunno. I guess I just don't see what's so wrong with the system as it is. But then, I vote how I like and comment how I like and expect others to do the same. They routinely do, and my photos don't always score very well. But I don't think that the "solution" to my photos not scoring well is to change how everyone votes, it's for me to take better photos.

I like the system how it works now.
I really prefer to see 1 and 2 than comments like "it's the worse photo I've ever seen" or "better find another hobby , you're too bad" or similar.
Until now I never have reveiced a comment justifying a very low vote , well one was quite offensive but not constructive.
When I receive 1 and 2 , I think : someone has a bad calibrated monitor , someone really dislikes this shot , someone thinks my photo is better than his/hers ...
