OK, the camera doesn't seem to be focusing on the smoke.

How to cure that? Place something solid in the path of the smoke. Lock focus on it. Remove the object and then shoot.

That is pretty good other than the focus.

Okay, what Fotoman said.

Edit for repeat

dang too slow but I will still respond...

I haven't ever tried shooting smoke before but I'm assuming it is blurry cause you can't get a good focus on something like that. I would suggest (if you haven't already), turn on the lights and hold something up at about the position the smoke will be so and set your focus. Make sure the camera is on manual focus so it doesn't try to re-focus when shooting. Now set up the smoke and give it a try.

btw...despite the blurry part, it is a cool effect with the black background and blue lighting.

good luck.

Might be focus, but might still be motion blur. What was the shutter speed?

Are you using autofocus? If so, turn it off and focus on a held object right in the plane where the smoke will rise. Also, what kirbic said, try for the fastest shutter you can manage.

whoops, fotoman said it.

Definitely a possibility. Without the flash to freeze the motion a fast shutter speed is needed. I guess it could also be a combination of the two.

My advice:

If you're not using flash, you'll need to use a pretty fast shutter speed, like at least 1/125 second. Flash is ideal, though.

Light the smoke from the side.

Take lots of pictures.

i took about 200 last night and about the same tonight. my shutter was at 1/80. anything higher made my pics too dark and i couldnt bump up the ISO cause the noise was sooo bad that even neat image wouldnt cure it. and i used the self timer. i had a lot of cool affects but they were all out of focus. the smoke was going in all directions. i had to take a break though, cause the incense were killin me!

Read my last posthere.

No way to get rid of the motion blur without a flash and locked focus.
