I figure that there's a 1-10 range, and therefore we are meant to use it. Voting on a truncated scale doesn't allow for much nuance between the numbers. It just means that 5 in your world is 1. Or maybe 1 and 2, since there isn't as much room for degrees. While the big scores and gushing praise are nice, it's not why most of us are here.

But you don't use it for non-DNMC entries if I read your earlier post correctly. Is there really a difference here?

It's the criteria that merits the largest point deduction, in my opinion. Other deductions and bonuses are given/subtracted for technical skill, originality, interest, appeal, etc. - DNMC is just one more criteria. Otherwise, every challenge would be a free study. I do vote the entire scale. But if you didn't bother to try to meet the challenge, why should I bother to give you a high score? It's like when you were in school, turning in a paper that has nothing to do with the assigned subject. Would your teacher ignore the assignment and reward you on your writing ability, or would she flunk you for not doing the homework she gave you?

DrAchoo - Do you wear a wedding ring?

Because if that's the indicator we could market wedding rings for those who can't score or score little...just a thought.

I mostly go through and give everything a 1. Then if I remember before the challenge ends I pick a few at random to give 5's and 6's so my hard work doesn't get eliminated.

I'm all for widening the bell curve a bit. I hand out lots of 8&9's and lots of 2&3's (not a lot of 1 & 10's but I'm not scared to do so). I'm trying to raise my ave vote but sometimes there is more crap than cream

I think its quite interesting from a stats point of view that some really horrible photo can come last with 4 and the blue in the same challenge gets less than a 7

My wife insists that more women flirt with me now that I wear a wedding ring than when she and I were just dating. If I had only known.

The other thing that really riled me and contributed to my high scoring ...

Your voting stats don't quite back up your post, Jim!
Votes Cast: 15944
Avg Vote Cast: 5.4390

Actually they do! It takes a long time to right the wrongs of the past.
And I used to vote a lot more often. Now I never vote in a competition that i am in. Right or wrong that is what i do.

I think it only works if someone else is wearing the opposite ring sorta like the wonder twins' powers.

I'm not questioning your voting just that you use only part of the scale for DNMC entries and another part for non-DNMC entries. That's fine and all but that's the choice you made and not something dictated by the site.

Actually, that's an oversimplification. I figure simply meeting the challenge is worth at least three points, so that's where it starts - though I very very rarely give a 3 to a photo that meets the challenge. It has to be seriously deficient to get that. On the other hand, I feel that not meeting the challenge is worth a six point deduction.
