So I was working on a couple versions of my BW Portrait entry and I definatly entered one that was meant as a joke for my wife instead of the real one. Now it is really getting trashed. Mark up a 4 for a mistake.

What exactly is that you want to say then? |

Ummm... I was making a general vent. Maybe I'm not the only one out there that ever made the same mistake. Fun stuff like that. |

We all make mistakes. But I don't think they all need to appear in a google search.

You could always take a self-DQ. This is the type of thing that I think it was meant for. |

my suggestion is ... let it slide ... learn and move on ... with the number of participants and the current scoring on this challenge you might only be half way down the scoring ladder ... LOL |

I am now wishing I hadn't used my self-dq on the death challenge. That picture just sucked and wasn't up to par with my usual entries. (I average around 5.0 and this was getting around 3). My submission for the B&W entry is also subpar (around 4.0) but since its a picture of my girlfriend she is taking it personally. (i.e. She thinks she's the reason its not doing well and has nothing to do with the crappy post work I did). And since she's taking it personally I'm starting to take it personally. (i.e. I think she's pretty and the picture I did isn't doing justice to that fact).
Anyways...another rant.

Just tell her that DPC isn't the place to rate herself and if she's got a problem with that, dump her! :) |

...and breathe... I'm just offering an alternative that is there. I'm not advocating, championing, or otherwise saying it's good or bad. It just is.
Is it just me or are people grumpy in this thread? |

Maybe you're sensing that I'm sick. Grumpy no. I just think that self-DQ is a cop out. "I can't accept that I'm getting a low score, so I'm bailing out." I think it's rediculous.
DPC is a learning site. We all learn from our mistakes and submitting the wrong image is one of those situations.
I've got an entry that is scoring the lowest I've ever had. I could ask for a self-DQ, but that would keep me from learning why it did poorly. You can't assume that you know why, because that's not living in reality. |

That's fine, and I'm not sure that I don't agree with you in principle. However, the OP said that he entered the wrong image by mistake. Yes, he should have not made that mistake, but we are all human and make mistakes. This is a way to get out of it.
Think of it this way. Lets say we play in a golf tournament and the rules allow for one mulligan. You and I would probably prefer to play without the mulligan and most likely won't take it. But we know that others will take it because they are allowed to. Are they wrong to take it? Or are we wrong not to take it since we are then operating under more restrictive rules than the rest of the competition.
Either way, it is up to you, just as it is up to the OP. If you are really that against the self-DQ, start a petition or something. But I don't think people should be made to feel bad for taking advantage of a rule that is there for this very reason. |

I really didn't mean to get everyone so worked up this morning. Even though I am not going to do it, I feel like this a perfect example of why self-dq was created. We do all make mistakes, but when it is really harmless and an honest one we shouldn't have to pay a large price for it.
I happen to be getting some interesting comments on it so I will ride it out for the learning experience alone.

My two cents?
The self-DQ is there if you really need or want it.
It's nice to know it's there.
One thing to consider....do *YOU* like the picture?
If the answer's yes, then it doesn't matter what anyone else thinks at all.
I like it when I score well, and it's good for my self-confidence, but if that's what you're specifically here for, then may I say emphatically that this is NOT the place to be.......8>)
You will learn from any entry, whether you learn what you expected or not, if it's simply that the entry that you submitted wasn't what you thought in the eyes of others.
My last two challenge entries were a total shock to me as to their reception.
The one is going to be my best effort yet by almost a point and a half, and the other one is being thrashed worse than I could have imagined.
Just another day at DPC!...............8>)
