Just comparing before purchasing. I am looking at sharpness in my work.

85 one of the sharpest lenses in the canon lineup... get it.

I don't think that will fit his Nikon D50.

I am bidding on both lenses on ebay. I need help in choosing which one is the better one for portraits

oh woops... sell your camera, buy a canon, then get a 85 1.8 ;)

Nikon or Canon. Get the 85. And when you do finally get a Canon, you can get the 1.4. Maybe I'll have one by then too. My 70-200 is a nice stop gap though. And it's pretty too!
