This challenge thing is really starting to be a lot of fun.
What do you think of the title I picked for this one?
I thought about going with something like Dakota Cold or Dakota Ice, but did not know if that would give the location away or give away who even took it.
Your thoughts please.... |

I remembered the photo and not the title if that gives you an idea of how much concern you should probably have over the title. For me, titles never work in a photos advantage. They either cause no harm or they...
a) show the photog is some idiot kid who KaNt Spel
b) insult me by assuming I can't figure out the image without a paragraph of text beneath it
c) irritate me by being the only thing about the submission that is relevant to the challenge
... in which case they hurt the score.

I try not to look at the title when voting ... I also remembered the photo ... thought (poor photog had to go out in that mess to get this pic) and I'll agree with routerguy666 that I get irritated when the only thing that is relevant to the challenge is the title (I vote down for that also, no matter how good the picture is)
anyway FWIW, I gave it a 7 during voting ... good shot! |

Thanks for the replies.
Yeah, now I wonder why we even have to put titles too. :)
It was nice out the day I took this.
Just about left the camera at home as we were heading out to another town to do some shopping. I remembered hearing that they had some light freezing rain between here and there the night before so I took the camera with thinking maybe there would be some iced up fences.

Sometimes I wish that the title was hidden until the voting was over. Like routerguy said: If you need the title to explain how your submission meets the challenge? It probably doesn't meet the challenge.
Half the time, people don't know the difference between a title and a caption. And I know for a fact that photo titles really shouldn't have smilies in them.
Heck I'd be happy if we had the option to hide titles while we go through voting.
*edit* By the way Lakota, your submission did NOT fall under this category. I like the title you chose personally

I'm sure you could have come up with something more clever (or someone else could!) but I don't really see how your title could ever detract from your photo. If it was something stupid like "My Backyard!" or "Icy Fencey" or "Frozen Yogurt," I can see people deducting a point or two out of annoyance...
I try to remain title-neutral while voting, but the fact is, a good title can bring alot to the photo. A quick example from the front page:
Hardened by Life
This title really ties everything together. Its still a great photo on its own, but the title brings so much more of a story to it than three simple words normally could.
I'm not going to go searching for a bad title (although I'm sure my own portfolio would be a good starting point!). I hope my rambling here makes sense to others...

As option posted, a really well-chosen title can add. When that happens, it's because the title drives home the emotion that the photographer intended to be conveyed. Option's example of "Hardened by Life" is a wonderful example.
Edit: I often agonize over titles, but I don't always (or even most times) come up with something that really satisfies me, really resonates with the image. IMO, this is probably a defect in the *image.* That particular shot is just not conveying a strong, coherent emotion that begs for a title. the very best shots nearly always "strike a chord" of emotion in the viewer, and it's the title's responsibility to amplify that chord.

I love titles! I reward apt, clever or insightful titles. I don't mind the title being the image's only connection to the challenge topic if it is done well. I try not to subtract for bad titles or spelling - because many people are here because they are visually (and not necessarily linguistically) oriented.
That said, I thought your title was fine, certainly did not detract. Fenced out, Iced out. Makes sense. And for this photo, something clever or complicated might not fit the simplicity of the image. âSome say the world will end in fire, some say in ice.â - Robert Frost
Congrats on the nice placing and score! |
