Just finished voting on this and I can't help wondering if blown out highlights have suddenly become trendy - there are lot's of those... (If it's a trend I sure hope it's not going to stay long - it's just awful) |

There is a style of photography called High-Contrast B&W. Completely valid form of art. |

Sure it's valid - and there are a few who have done a good job using this technique and where it actually enhances the picture. But these examples a very few IMO... |

The trick in HC B&W is to NOT blow out the Highlights. I pushed mine right to the limit in this one but they aren't blown out. My scores are still bad though ;)

I'm disapointed with my score so far, too. I'm sitting at 5. I wish I could get more comments from people giving me 3's and 4's so I know what to improve. It would be nice to see why you get that mark. Pretty tough when there is 500 pics though

Well, I am probably one of those newbies who are flooding YOUR competition....Yep I'm sure that we will all dissappear after a while.
I have to say, my score is not the best (hovering around the 5's) & yep, its probably one of the so called soft focused snap shots (hmmm, I had a choice...go to my studio (yep, we all have studios) or get out and about with my subject & take some photo's), but I came here to learn, pick up some pointers & improve.
The feeling I am getting now (mainly from this thread. The comments I received were helpful & constructive) is that us Newbies may not necessarily be welcome here. Sure, in 2 months entries will probably half, but please, there maybe some that want to learn & hang around. Dont tar us all with the same brush. |

Welcome to DPC hoffy. Here at this insane place you have to grow a thick skin. It can be brutal but that is part of the charm of this place and it helps you learn.
Don't leave cuz of this thread people are just venting. I for one am happy that there are nOOb's here as I have stuff to learn form you as well as the old pros. Don't fret and enjoy the 5ish score that's better than allot in this challenge.
Glad you are here. Take what you need and leave the rest. :-D

No, I am not fretting about the score. I have noticed from this thread that there are a lot more experienced photographers below me (I think that this highlights that photography is a very personal medium, not that these photo's are bad...)
Anyhow, looking foward to improving |

From my comments, it seems that the voters either LOVE my photo or HATE it. I think that is a GOOD sign, maybe, but it doesn't help my score much ... LOL.

| For those who saw my screw up submitting a color picture in the B&W Challenege and one that was not a portrait, I am sorry for the error. My score & the number of stupid ass comments I am getting serves me right. Was a total accident and that is what I get for not paying attention. Oh well, just pass on by during voting it WILL be disqualified for sure and rightfully so. What is kind of a drag is some of the idiotic comments people are wasting their time placing on the boards..Look, it was a %*^&%$^ accident get over it and move on! lololol I mean, nobody is getitng paid for their ribbons here and it isn't like I pissed on your lawn (Though some of the contestants would argue that I did)On most challeneges I get maybe 5 comments, but make a mistake and 20 people have repeated themselves in one day!!!Lord have mercy some of us need to get our arses to work! lol...Again, sorry about the screw up fellow shooters double dumb %ss on me.... |

You will not be DQed for not meeting the challenge. you'll only be DQed if you self DQ or it is asked to be validated and doesn't meet editing rules. So you might not want to let people know which photo is yours during voting even if you're not trying to boost your score(which I know you are not). Just a heads up. :)

LOL I saw that one and knew it had been an error. I also knew LOTS of people would be so happy to tell you about your error, so I didn't bother. We all make mistakes. Don't worry about it. :)
