I think my 300D decided to give up with the efforts of flipping up the mirror today :(
I was shooting, with the standard lens today, 4 shots fine, then the mirror didn't move anymore, the apature dimmed the viewfinder, and that was it.
error 99.
have tried removing and inserting battery, refitting lens, different lens.
am about to try and flash the memory, and hope its software.. but I have a bad feeling :'(

Try going into the sensor clean mode, as this locks the mirror up and you can see if it's the mirror mechanism that's broken.

anyone else have similar issues with that camera?
if is a common thing - i think i will be sure mines busted before the warranty runs out...
have the camera shop loan you a camera at least through wednesday if they are giving you a hard time about it locking up.
find a SLR that will take your lenses and use film this week....
just my 1st ideas on what i would do

I bought a 10D in May and after 2 weeks of use the same thing happened to me. I took it into the dealer who told me that if I hadn't of sent in the warranty card he could have just switched cameras and sent that one back. However, I did and he sent it to Canon for repair. I was told that usually it takes up to 6 weeks to come back but that he would write "For Professional Use" on the slip and it would probably come back in 2 or 3. After 3 weeks with no camera the dealer called Canon and was told that they were "backed up" and it would be another 3 or 4 weeks before I could have the camera. I was outraged --having to wait 7 weeks for a brand new camera that I used for 2 weeks. The dealer then just gave me a new camera and said he would deal with the company himself.
However, this one does not have that problem but I am not happy with my selection. If I had the money I would get rid of this in a hot moment and get something else.
Good luck to you. |

This sounds like they have a fundamental design flaw -- there can't be that many of these in circulation yet. If any of you are subscribers to Consumer Reports you might want to drop them a note about your experience ...
Also, when you get new equipment, you might want to make a copy of the registration card to mail in, and keep the original. |

Here's a thread on dpreview 300D that discusses error 99..Apparently there are more threads regarding this problem on the 10D forum as well.

ok, its gonna be 1 to 2 weeks in repair, no stock expectred till janurary :/
he said usually 2 weeks, but he's going to push it for professional use, and he said they may push it out within a week, but don;t hold my hopes up.
it was actually the leaf shutter mechanism broke.
the guy said it looks like someone pushed it from behind when loading a film.
the shutter is all buckled, awful :(
the mirrors fine, but won;t flick if the shutter can;t move.
I've asked him what the best deal he can do for a 10D, another 512M and equiv lens with the as-new 300d for a trade in. see what happens.

Actually they've sold more 300D's than just about anything else! Basically techies are saying don't look for a price decrease in any canon models since they can't keep them on the shelf. I think Canon is doing better with this new SLR line than ever before, from what I've read [extensive reports].
Just a note, Futureshop has a price guarantee that they match any competitor's regular price and if you have problems, they'll replace it. They told me for the 300D I can bring it back for repairs a million times, but if I want, they can just replace it. ANd if the model is discontinued they'll upgrade me for free. My roomate bought an Xbox from there, he brought it back 3 times and all 3 times they just gave him a new one.
