I think I am really going to love this lens when I get a feel for it.
Here are the first few shots, at least the ones that I was able to get a kid to stay still long enough to focus on something. Kids are moving targets! Would love some comments, tips and other examples of what this lens is capable of in experienced hands.
Edited to take one out.

The eyes on Hannah are wonderful and with just a touch more depth of field that photo would have been DEVASTATING. Get some more of her with a smile like that before her baby teeth start jumping out!
Avery's shot is also lacking a bit in the DOF department, and don't forget (in the excitement of your new lens) to watch out for what is in the background. Very important with a portrait lens such as this but the nice thing about it is that you can worry less and less about what is in the background the further the background is away from the subject as, of course, it will get more and more out of focus.
Both are well composed shots and don't let anyone convince you that "chopping off" someone's head is ALWAYS a bad thing. I find it gives you a bit of an IN YOUR FACE reality aspect to a portrait shot.
I think you are going to have a WONDERFUL time with that lens, especially with people and animal subjects. ENJOY!

Those are some nice shots Julie.
I got the same lens for Christmas too. I've only been able to take a few snapshots with mine so far, but I can tell that it's a nice, sharp lens.
Enjoy your new lens!

Now that I am home from work, I went through the others I snapped. I found two that I like a little better. Hannah's mouth is a little more in focus, not sure why because I didn't change any settings. Her smile is more genuine in this one. SHe is still hugging that gray post, but I will try and retake these later and see if I can get her to be still without hugging something. I'll have to try some more ps magic on them later. I am off to bed after a 16 hour shift.

They look fantastic, basically.
The lens doesn't do the work on it's own though, so very well done!

I'm loving the low light auto-focus speed. |

Wow, thanks for that link. I didn't know you could search for photos based on what lens was used to take them. Neat. Thanks for all the input everyone. I loook forward to more time to play with it after we move and get settled. |
