i think that DPC as website i as is should be. simple.
the simplicity will come back to the web sooner or later and DPC will lead the pack ... as for other reasons i would really like to see graphical update to the DPC, not necessary to change color scheme just to do some more attractive web site graphics ... ummm, errrr .... that's it

Uh, a lot?
Adding bells, whistles, whips, chains, crepe paper, and the like are all nice but don't affect the emotion and drive behind the site. Yahoo is an information service, so rearranging that info is a great feature that allows the user to better access the info. Rearrangement at DPC is not so much a tool, in my mind, as it is a niceity.
The best thing about this site is that we can be looking at a photo, see an interesting comment, click on the commenter's profile, see someone they have favorited, look at the favorite's photos, and start all over again, again and again. Granted, I don't do this as often as I should, but lots of us do, and good for them. This has got to be one of the largest art galleries on earth, after all, with something close to 500,000 images.

Re-model the kitchen, install new appliances? What I'm talking about is a fork-lift upgrade of the site. These new additions are welcome, but I think the time has come for DPC re-innovation on a massive scale. |
Although a few changes like more personalization of your homepage may be ok I would use the Cheers quote above to argue that you need to be very careful. The attractiveness of Cheers was it was a simple and comfortable place where âeverybody knew your nameâ. Norm was able to come in everyday for a beer, the same seat at the bar and conversation about life.
What do you think would have happened if one week you tuned in and they had done a major remodel, your normal seat was no longer there, the conversation had changed, your friends were no longer there, the jukebox was blaring, ads where flashing from neon signs on the walls, etc. etc., you get the point. The attraction of Cheers was its simplicity, friendliness and comfort. There were plenty of other bars out there with all the bells and whistles.
Change is good if it enhances the basic mission and experience of the users but we have to be careful when changing not to ruin the âCheersâ atmosphere.
Just my thoughts.

Photoshop 5.5 was perfect - please don't change a thing!
Photoshop 7.0 - WOW - PERFECT FOR SURE - please don't mess it up!
Photoshop CS?
Did they add features that I never ever would have asked for or even considered necessary?
Was Photoshop 1.5 simpler than CS/2?
Am I glad it got more complex?
Was the transition an easy one? Did I have to get used to it? Did I have to pay more money over the course of time?
Was it worth it? Absolutely |

In my opinion, not a good analogy, Photoshop being an indispensible tool with which a pro or semi-pro is always going to have to be familiar, and DPC being a diversion that, without any improvements whatsoever, will always work just fine. |

photoshop 1.5 was pretty much a diversion - a completely dispensible tool |

And every time they came out with a new upgrade to Photoshop you had to add memory or computing power or a better monitor or you could not use the features effectively or easily. Most software upgrades are this way... the same as it would be for the servers that run this site if a lot of features were added. There are trade offs and nothing is free.

You must have been on a Macintosh! :D
I just love the layout of this site--easy on the eyes, refreshingly simple, intuitive nav, well-thought out statistical info and having the ability to screw with my profile page a little is enough for me. This is the best photo place on the web, along with dgrin.com from a non-challenge basis.
Yes, I have memberships on various web 2.0 sites, but this place is better than all of them "as is". |

I agree. Most customizations that are offered by sites seem to be catered to 10 year olds. I'd rather see a page I can go to that would allow me to install new features if I want or make these enhancements as transparent as possible and for the most part that is what DPC has been doing. |

Personally I think adding bells and whistles will kill membership. As this is a Community of many nations the more you add to the site the more time it takes to load on dial up, and the more it costs some members for that stuff to load. So in order to increase these "bells and whistles" we then have to increase the cost of membership, then we increase the cost for those that pay my the MB or whatever the current costs are the less likely it will be for those members to join in or get new members to join. My theory is if it isnt broke dont fix it, cause usually you break more things then you fix in the process. I'm not against change or improving anything, but just because you change something doesnt automatically make it better.

the only change I would like to see here is allowing larger file size in the challenge, Sometimes 150KB isn't enough to keep details intact.
What i would like to see is perhaps 2 viewable versions of each challenge for the voting. one for broadband one for dialup. I know there are scripts that will automatically make a downsized copy of an uploaded photo. Not sure what the extra costs would be bandwidth wise or how much time it would take to build. But I think it would do the site justice not to mention increase the overall quality of the challenges. This would give the voter a choice to view the challenges with low or high bandwidth.

I'm usually one of the first to jump on a new bandwagon, but I'm going to have to say I like this site just the way it is.
The idea of everyone's profile page being rediculously different with a bunch of other stuff that's been mentioned doesn't sound appealing to me at all
The only feature I'd like added is a way to just click through the photos of a challenge after the voting is over (like how you can while you're voting) - like a slideshow feature if you will |

wavelength, I think your heart is in the right place.
But sites like MySpace have tainted the idea of customization and community with stupid things like ugly background images and embeddable movies and sound.
Naturally I'm a web developer, and the company I work for is developing a very "web 2.0" site, so I tend to agree with you. There are things that would make DPC more functional and more intersting for people. Often they don't even realize it because maybe they haven't thought of it. You say "customizable" and they think ugly backgroung images.
Case in point is my "Show Images in Forums" DPCmod. Admittedly it's bells and whistles, but some folks really love it. For them, it really adds a new level of personability to the forums.
The tough part is how to please everybody. You can make things optional, but there're even people who hate too many options. =)
That's why the GreaseMonkey is a nice FireFox extension. It allows one to change the site (to some extent, that is) to one's liking. And users who want to try these things out have to proactively install the mods, so you're not annoying the folks who like things the way they are.
If you want, we could get you an option to move the "Hot Threads" on the front page to the top of the page. =)
Cheers,
-Jeff |
