Dare I admit that ramen are one of my favorite foods. I know.. I know.. salt, fat, carbs.. all of them bad for you, but with a lot of sliced green onions, some frozen salad shrimp, a dash of balsamic vinegar, and some sambal badjak to hot it up, ramen are perfect in cold weather. Not only that, they go on sale periodically for $.10 per package!
Whoever wrote about using only half the seasoning packet, I'll have to try that.

He didn't invent ramen noodles, he just invented a way to make instant ramen noodles by adding hot water.

I believe that's correct - it was Al Gore that invented the noodles, if I remember correctly. ;-) |

Yeah, one brand even suggests it on the package back. If you're adding all that other good stuff you won't need as much of that powdery stuff. Other good additions to add some protein are a hard-boiled egg or some tofu.

We buy Ramen in bulk at Sams. My kids would eat it for every meal if I would let them!
I like to eat when I have an upset tummy. Or, if I want something quick.
You have to try them.... they are the bomb diggity! ;)

I cook them in the water with half the pack of seasoning, drain off the water and add the other half of the seasoning. I have added other stuff to them and even used them in a stir fry dish. I can't imagine trying to eat them uncooked. kids can be odd sometimes!
Oh and Here we get them 10-12 for a dollar. Arizona is 97 on sale to 1.10 EACH and in Canada they are even more! Amazing the price differences!

Funny you should mention that, but I went to lunch at a Japanese restaurant with my son, and he ordered ramen noodles off the menu. I wound up paying $9.00 for a bowl of pork ramen. Granted, it had a lot of really delicious sliced pork and vegetables in it, but $9.00????
I also went to a potluck once where three people brought a "Chinese Chicken Salad" which had broken up raw ramen noodles in it "to give it crunch". (No argument there!) Ever since then, I have firmly believed that ramen should be eaten hot and cooked.

I wonder if he was a pastafarian - that would make an interesting conversation.
FSM: I am your maker.
Momofuku Ando: No - I am your maker.
FSM: I think that you'll find...
Momofuku Ando: Nope - I invented you!

I stumbled here and realize that most of you refers to ramen as instant noodle. That is so wrong! I just had to point this out because I'm a ramen addict. |

Interesting article -- mostly sounds sensible. Note that he doesn't say you have to avoid soy products (even tofu) entirely, but that they should be a limited part of an otherwise healthy diet, much like almost every other food product we eat.
Exerpt:
"Dr. Daniel: Soy lowers Testosterone levels! Just about all soy products on the market contain the phytoestrogens (plant estrogens) known as isoflavones. Plant estrogens have lowered Testosterone levels in rats, monkeys, and other animals as well as humans. For grown men, this usually leads to decreased libido and lower sperm count."
As he writes (about something else) elsewhere in the article,
"This last could be good for the planet."

An exerpt from today's NY Times editorial page:
Ramen noodles, by contrast, are a dish of effortless purity. Like the egg, or tea, they attain a state of grace through a marriage with nothing but hot water. After three minutes in a yellow bath, the noodles soften. The pebbly peas and carrot chips turn practically lifelike. A near-weightless assemblage of plastic and foam is transformed into something any college student will recognize as food, for as little as 20 cents a serving.
There are some imperfections. The fragile cellophane around the ramen brick tends to open in a rush, spilling broken noodle bits around. The silver seasoning packet does not always tear open evenly, and bits of sodium essence can be trapped in the foil hollows, leaving you always to wonder whether the broth, rich and salty as it is, is as rich and salty as it could have been. The aggressively kinked noodles form an aesthetically pleasing nest in cup or bowl, but when slurped, their sharp bends spray droplets of broth that settle uncomfortably about the lips and leave dots on your computer screen.
But those are minor quibbles. Ramen noodles have earned Mr. Ando an eternal place in the pantheon of human progress. Teach a man to fish, and you feed him for a lifetime. Give him ramen noodles, and you donĂ¢€™t have to teach him anything.
