I have read and reread the updated rules since they were published in regards to the advanced editing and am still kind of stuck on one thing...
Are we still allowed to add a blur filter (gaussian blur/motion blur) to the background of a photo?
Under the You May section there is:
apply filters, effects, dodge & burn, and other tools to all or part of your entry, but NO new shapes or features may be created in the process.
But under the You May Not section:
use ANY editing tool to create new image area, objects or features (such as lens flare or motion) that didn't already exist in your original capture.
If someone could clarify for me I would really appreciate it. I would love to give an example of what/why I am questioning this but am afraid it would not be appropriate if I can do it and choose to submit my photo in question.

In regards to motion, you can't create the illusion of motion if there was no motion blur in the original image. At least this is how I understand it.
Hopefully an SC member will step in and clarify for you. |

Thanks for the reply...that is kind of what I thought too, but like I said, for some reason it just confuses me. I thought I had read something on another thread when the new revised rules came out that said gaussian blur was ok, which is why I wondered if the motion blur was also ok. At least in regards to the background of a pic, not the subject.
So if we can't create the illusion of motion if no motion was there to begin with, IS the gaussian blur still ok since that isn't really a "motion" blur? |

Gaussian Blur is allowed as long as it isn't used to remove a major element.

Not to pick nits or anything, but the phrase "major element" no longer appears in the rules, and your use of it is very confusing for people who are trying to understand the difference between the old rules and the new rules especially...

ok then...
Gaussian Blur is allowed as long as it isn't used to remove "an element of your photograph that would change a typical viewer̢۪s description of the photograph"
I still think major element is easier tho :P
