If you're doing long exposures, how do you set CF2, long exposure noise reduction? (mine is auto)
Other settings I use:
CF8, ISO expansion - on
CF16 safety shift - on
CF17 AF point activation area - expanded (ie use the extra 6 points)
CF0 focusing screen (I use the gridded screen, so this isn't something most people will use)

Oh yes, I use ISO expansion as well...
The auto noise reduction is just set to auto or off, isn't it? I tend to keep it off unless I'm doing night shots and then I turn it on.

ugh saftey shift on?! EW what a terrible setting that is. Ever try shooting sports in the dark thinking you'll push the exposure in post because you're just maxing your settings? Say AV all the way open, ISO all the way up, but then the camera keeps trying to take slow exposures? I didn't know such a feature existed until I got home from that day of shooting so frustrated I wanted to kill something.

I leave it at auto, on longer daytime shots (ISO 100, f/16 indoors, no flash) it doesn't seem to kick in, but then there's no noise to start with.
I don't do a lot of night shooting, so I'd forget to turn it on :-) |

I think it really doesn't start to make a difference until you are using exposures of say 10 seconds or so.

Suppose it depends on what you shoot. Haven't done sports since I got the 5D, so it hasn't been an issue. But in indoor games where the lighting was even (horrible, but even) I used manual. Metered off a target, then shot the whole game with that setting. Of course, with the 300D, ISO 1600 and f/2.8, I was lucky to get 1/125 (in fact, 1/125 was a bit underexposed). Manual may have been a better choice because faces always came out properly exposed; with Av, sometimes the background fooled the AE system.

Per the manual, auto noise reduction kicks in at 1 second (if needed in auto mode). But that's not saying it makes a difference at 1 second :-) |
