Hello all, I have a new lens on the way to me. It's the Canon EF 24-70mm F2.8L USM... I'm so excited! I hope to have it early next week so I can start giving it a workout.

I am also looking at getting a longer range telephoto sometime in the near future (hopefully next summer) and I was wondering if anyone could tell me if the

Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8L IS USM

is worth the extra money over the

Canon EF 70-200mm F2.8L USM

Thanks for any info.

I just bought the Canon 5D with a new Canon 70-200 f/2.8L IS and love them both. The lens is pretty heavy compared to my Canon 70-200 F/4L. I can shoot inside a livingroom with low light at ISO 400 at 1/8 sec handheld and still have a sharp pic with the IS. Have fun and enjoy it.

I have the non-IS lens.....it's great, but heavy and would really benefit from the IS especially during long shoots. Get the IS if you can swing it :-)

I have really been thinking about getting a EF 24-70mm f/2.8L USM myself. I currently own the kit lens for the XTi and have a 50mm on its way. Is there any reason this lens wouldn't be a good next step for me? Is there a cheaper lens that would be somewhat comparable if I decide not to spend that much?

Edit: Fixed link

look at the simga EX DG series lens...
there's always a compromise - but they tend to be high quality optics and a fair bit cheaper than the canon L.

a guy at a local camera repair place dumped all his L glass and switched over to all sigma - so he told me... he also said he isn't unhappy with his decision.

EDIT: though the resale value of the canon L is likely higher than a comparable after market lens.
