Yep, it's time for another round of "huh"? Let's meet our next contestant:

Six commenters averaged 7.6 with all positive comments. The other 212 voters averaged 2 points lower without mentioning why.

So - step right up and take yer best shot! No comments refused! All honest criticism gratefully accepted!

Help this poor, confused photog improve. Please. :)

Disclaimer: the aforementioned photog is actually perfectly happy with a 5.6, just really scratching his head because the thing is in focus, has a variety of colors, and seems well-exposed to him.

To me personally it's a pretty boring subject with no special technique used to inject interest into it. Which is to say it has been captured fairly well, technically but slightly boingly for me.

Although i did not vote on it.

I did not vote, but the reason is fairly obvious I think. If you had only 6 commenters or whatever, then they obviously took the time to look at and appreciate your entry. Thus giving you higher scores.

If you want my opinion on the photo, I personally think candles/matches/flames are generically boring. I even went so far as to try it myself and I was bored with my own entry:

So if I were you, I wouldn't be offended or confused. It is subject matter more than anything.

I'm offended by all imagery that does not celebrate Festivus, the only true holiday.

Enjoy your 5.6 in hell, heathen!!!

And where is the picture of your aluminum pole?

I think in general, commenters tend to vote higher. It is because they take longer to view your image than those who simply vote. I know a submission is good when I find that I am spending a lot of time looking at it. I find this holds true for my own images as well. I'd almost say (as a GROSS over generalization) that an image will earn 1 point every 5 seconds of viewing. And again...that's a GROSS over generalization...

A little off subject but definately a vote issue. Don't ya just love votes and comments from register visitors who have never submitted to a challenge and have never put anything in any forums? Common, if you are going to participate then enter, if ya don't want to be part of it and let us judge your photos then ..... oh what the heck .... go away and play somewhere where you feel more like being a real participant. Ya I know the flames with flow to me on this comment. BUT, heck if you want to give stupic comments then at least allow us to give great comments on yours!

I agree 100%

I didn't vote on that entry but for me the more interesting aspect is the candles themselves but they are mostly faded from view. So all I am left to see is mostly the flame which is as featureless as can be. I do agree with cutter in that the subject matter is pretty boring but then again that makes for a challenge now doesn't it? I would have possibly explored those in more interesting POVs rather than the straight on aspect you took which is most common. Hope that helps!

I think the other contributers to this thread have just about nailed it. The image is technically pretty well nailed, but there is little else to make the voter move his finger to the 6 or higher keys. Its what I call a 'record' shot, a good record of the scene/setup but with no artistry applied.

I realise that might sound harsh, but to get a 6+ in my marking scheme an image has to have something which shows me the photographer has more than a mastery of the technical aspects.

Thanks, everyone! I knew there would be reasons. :)

I'm still happy with it. Falc, you're right on target about wanting to record it. As I said in my comments on the photo, this is part of a set.

FWIW, the histogram of your scores shows the classic "technically competent but completely unexciting" distribution of scores.

Just remember that some of them may have their first submited image in an open challenge and therefore their profile will still say that they have not participated in any challenges.

This really just lacks "pop". all of your images are very nice, but nothing really screams at you. dpc folk aren't like normal people, we have seen some pretty amazing things and what is otherwise above average in the real world is boring here.

here is a tip, if you can look at a thumb nail and it compels you to click on it then it has pop, otherwise it's not going to give a blue.
