I just discovered (duh) why I need a good tripod. Have a cheapy one and if I turn the camera sidways, it does not stay supported in the position I set it.

So, what suggestions do you have for me on a low budget. I would like to get a decent one but not a high price tag.

Please advise and suggest features that I should look for.

I bought the cheapest one in my local camera shop, i think it's called the Star 62 or something and it's just great. I've had it at all angles and outdorrs and it's never let me down.

Try ebay. Not sure how 'cheap' you want, but I picked up a Bogen 3047 head for about 80 bucks, then a Bogen 3021 tripod with a head (which I'll sell) for about 150 bucks. Maybe not exactly 'cheap', but still a good price, I think. And heavy duty as all get out!

Hey, I use a Giottos VT-809. Works really well for me. Check it out on giottos.com

Can't tell what it will cost in your part of the world, but converted from Rand, I paid roughly $20 for it.

Here's mine. There's a few reasons I bought it, but 1 major one was it folded to 19.3"....perfect for my carryon when travelling.

thanks....high for me...is over $200.00 I'd say...but have a $20.00 Walmart and that obviously isn't going to cut it. fine for straight on shots....

I'll look around at your suggestions.... I didn't know the brand names to look for, or head types, etc.

I've seen these selling pretty cheap (comparitively) on Ebay:
Tripod link. I've never used this particular tripod, but have heard good things about it. I have the Manfrotto version of this setup, which I REALLY like but is a little out of your price range. The seller also has other models if you don't like the ballhead. I've bought lightstands from them, and they are a good seller.

Take a look at the SLIK tripod range, good quality, good prices. I have the 400DX PRO, under £100 in UK.

You can get a lot for $200.

The tripod head is a very personal preference--3 way, grip, ball, etc and within this range, there are a number of different quality levels. So go to a good camera store (ie one that has a large inventory) and try them. If you're going to NYC soon, stop by B&H. I think they have every quality tripod and head made on display.

ok....when I get home my tripod should be there....

I got a Bogen 3021P and a 488RC4 head...ok...over my $200.00's but I think it is worth it. Probably more of a Tripod then I need,but I won't need another, right?? :-P
