I am trying to back up several months worth of photos and other information I'm putting on CDs. I am running into a frustrating problem that perhaps someone here can help with.

After copying the files onto cd, I get this message:

"Cannot delete (whatever file). It is being used by another person or program. Close any programs that might be using the file and try again."

This is what I get after the files have been burned onto CD, at the time when usually, the temporary files are then deleted from the cd burning area.

I cannot find any other progam using the files at the same time. It won't let me delete the files from the CD burning menu at all. I can restart the computer, and THEN open the cd drive and delete the temporary files.

What it boils down to is that for every cd I burn right now, I'm having to restart the computer, and then delete the files. I have to do it that way because otherwise the files remain on the computer "to be burned" area...and I can't get around having them there. I can add to it up to the cd capacity, but obviously that isn't a solution.

Any ideas? I am using Windows XP.

I sometimes use Who Lock Me to find out what's using a file. It's generally Windows Explorer though and the only way I know of getting it to release a file is to reboot explorer. You can do that without actually rebooting the whole computer by ending it in your task menu and then doing run: explorer.exe. Maybe someone else has a better fix.

Are they RAW files and you have the Microsoft RAW viewer installed?? If so there is a known issue with that and I believe that upgrading the RAW viewer fixes the issue now - otherwise uninstall it and see if it continues.

No raw files at all. Just jpg mostly and then word documents and such. These are files currently on my hard drive. I'm trying to clear it off quite a bit and also back up a lot of things that I've gotten behind on. It's going to take forever this way though!

I've downloaded the "Who lock me" but I have no idea how to use it? When I open it, it says no file named?

Never mind...figured that part out. It does appear to be windows explorer.

Okay...not sure what the main issue is that is causing it, but MK your work around is much faster for me than a total restart. It does the trick and I thank you very much!
