Don and I will be there on Friday sometime. We plan on leaving after work on Thursday. Spend the nite somewhere around Richfield. We will stay until Monday and drive back to Altamont. We both look forward to this little miny vacation.

Chris and I are leaving after work on Friday, its about a 5 hour drive for us. We will get in late Friday and stay until Tuesday morning. Seems a lot of overlap on the part of different participants. Should be a lot of fun! I am looking forward to meeting so many DOCers.

I am so disappointed, I am offically out of this year's RR GTG. At work we are training for a new operating system in April and going live May 1st. I've know about this for months but held out hope that the training would be mid April - I just found out the most intensive part of training for me is the last week of April so I can't even imagine getting off early Friday. Just not enough time left for the seven hour drive from SLC. The real crappy part about all this is that some of my co-workers, in a different department, were fortunate and got to visit our head office in Austria for pre-training, but not me, stuck here in town. So I missed Austria and now I must miss the GTG (wahhh I want a raise). If this happens next year - I'll quit ... I swear ... work that is.

I was so looking forward to seeing old DPC friends and meeting all the new people signed up. I hope you all have an amazing adventure and travel safe. Take care, Heidi

Sorry you can't make it. I'm looking forward to meeting fellow Utahans (I think that's how you spell it). I know what you mean about the drive. From Altamont it's about 8 hrs.

I'd be interested to see at least tentative plan too. It'll also be good for people joing late or leaving early.

Just got back from South Carolina. Once I get my taxes done, I'll post details. If you have special times or days for things you'd like to see, do and shoot, let me know.

We're several hours and many miles from Dead Horse Point. I do think there is a major horseshoe bend in the area. I'll see if I can find it and add it to our tour.

Hello everyone,

I've been doing some more research to make sure we have a great time and use our time for some terrific photography. I've found a fantastic site that shares many of the lesser know places/roads/photogenic areas near Page. It is //www.americansouthwest.net So far, we are planning to go to:

Antelope Canyon
Lake Powell
Buckskin Gulch Slot Canyon
Mushroom area
Vermillion Cliffs

I'm adding Glen Canyon Dam (they have a tour into the workings of the dam - nice mid-day time) and
Horseshoe Bend just south of Page.

We'll be taking the Smoky Mountain Road (gravel road) up and around to Warm Creek Bay.

We'll also be taking the Paria Valley Road which is quite scenic and takes us to a ghost town, an old cemetary and an old abandoned movie set which is well preserved. The link for this area is //www.americansouthwest.net/utah/grand_staircase_escalante/paria.html

If you have specific things you want to do on a day you are attending, let me know. Otherwise, I'll just arrange a schedule that I think works and go with that.

It's getting very exciting!

Sounds great , What about the weather, Temps during the day and night ? I called the hotel and they do have wireless internet service so if you are bringing your laptop make sure you bring a wireless card.

Weather? Take a look- //myweb.cableone.net/muzzy101/

It'll give you historic information as well as the predictions and current weather.

Okay - the taxes are done, although the bill was painful. Now, it's on to details and scheduling.

First of all, the disclaimer. I am no expert on any of these photo excursions. The only places I have actually been to are Lake Powell and Wire Pass/Buckskin Gulch. So, I am an explorer using the best tools I have.

My experience tells me, we shoot the slot canyons in the mid-day to capture the rays of sunshine that make it to the bottom of the canyon and fire up the colors of the rock. Aboveground, we shoot in the early morning and late afternoon/early to catch the golden light which sets the rocks and cliffs ablaze. Beyond that, the sunlight must hit the rock to set it aglow, so east facing vistas need to be shot in the morning and west facing vistas will need evening light.

Using that information, plus the postings you've made giving the days and times, I've put together a schedule. It will need to be flexible (somewhat) to meet our needs and can be changed in the next few days if we wish. Here goes:

Wednesday, April 25
Afternoon - Arrive and check in, meet the others who are arriving
2pm - Go on tour of Glen Canyon Dam
4pm - Explore Lake Powell and the Marina, Eat dinner and Photograph the sunset

Thursday, April 26 - Best chance for having clouds in the sky
Morning - Leave at 6 am for the Wave (if we've been able to obtain tickets) 3 miles hike after a 30-45 minute drive. If tickets were not obtained, this excursion will be postponed until we get some.

So, if no Wave, Leave at 5am to Horseshoe Bend to catch the sunrise and early soft light on the deep canyon. Back for Breakfast, then;
Mid-morning - Leave at 10am for the either E. Fork of Kaibito Creek or Water Holes Creek. Back for a late lunch or early dinner.

Evening - Rest, process shot, or general exploring

Friday, April 27
Morning - Early, on your own & Breakfast
8:30am Leave for Wire Pass/ Buckskin Gulch, 30-45 mile drive and then exploring the next 4-6 miles of these slot canyons and return to cars.

Beware: There will be alot of walking. The area is level, but may be sandy, muddy or rocky. Wear shoes that can get wet and that can remain a shade of red - same with socks. They will never be their original color again. We could be walking through standing water, anywhere from a few inches to several feet deep. You will get wet, but your gear doesn't need to. Take food with you.

Evening - Leave at 5:30 to explore the Paria Valley Road. Back after sunset for dinner

Saturday, April 28
Morning - 5am to Horseshoe Bend (time may change based on Thursday's experience) for a shorter shoot for those who "finally got themselves down here." Back for Breakfast

Midday - 10am to Antelope Canyon for permits and shooting. This could be anywhere from 2 - 4 hours of shooting. Back for late lunch.

Evening - Leave at 5:30 for more shooting on the Paria Valley Road. Back for dinner

Sunday, April 29
Morning - 5am to drive out to the Paria Rimrock (we lovingly have referred to them in this thread as Mushrooms and Toadstools or Hoodoos). About a 30-45 minute drive and then mile hike. Shoot until the light goes harsh. Bring breakfast with you.

Mid-day - On your own, which can include the church of your choice, which is where I'll be. Lunch

Afternoon - 3pm for a drive to and shoot on the Smoky Mtn Road. Back after sundown. Dinner

Monday, April 30
Morning - 5am on the road to explore the Vermillion Cliffs. Bring breakfast.

Afternoon - repeat any excursion that you missed and want to try. I'll be on the road home.

General notes: We'll take the Wave anytime we can get passes and move the planned excursion.

Rainbow Bridge would be an awesome early morning shot, but would require us to rent a boat in town the day before. Anyone interested? The cost would depend upon how many of us were splitting the fee.

Temperatures are predicted to range from 75 - 81 depending on the day. Lows are forecast from 54 to 61.

Sunrise is about 5:45 Mountain Standard Time, Sunset is 7:10.

Here it is. I'll be back to edit in the links to the places we're going.

I think we should give a huge round of applause to rjkstesch for doing all of this. It looks great to me, and I love that you have built in a few "your on your own" time into this. I am so looking forward to meeting you all!

Just a thought. Where are we going to be meeting each morning/evening? There are several of us that are staying in different hotels, it might be wise to have a particular meeting spot.

I wholeheartedly agree. Thank you very much for your research and organization of this GTG. All who attend will benefit greatly from your efforts and I appreciate it.

As far as renting a boat goes, I'm certainly willing to chip in for a rental and I'll gladly cover the cost for someone else who would like to go but are a little strapped. I've got quite a bit of experience in boats and I've rented one from the Lake Powell Marina before. It'll be my first time to Rainbow Bridge though and I think that it's quite a haul from that marina.

Getting extremely excited now and I can hardly wait!!!

It̢۪s going to be tough waiting out the next couple of days. If I could extend the arrangements that I have made for my son and my dog, I would leave a couple of days early. Everything else is in order. Oh well, I guess I̢۪ll have to wait until Wednesday to leave.

By the way, I̢۪ll be stopping on the west side of Zion NP to find an area that I found on my first trip and get the shots right this time (I̢۪ve learned a little on DPC since my first trip out there). I was going to find accommodations in that area for the night (Wednesday) and then drive to Lake Powell sometime on Thursday. Now that I̢۪ve seen the planned itinerary, I am instead going to drive on through the night and show up at Lake Powell late Wednesday night so I̢۪ll be able to join everybody for the Thursday morning trip to Horseshoe Bend. I might not get much sleep, but I̢۪ll make up for it after I return from the GTG. So please look for me Thursday morning. I̢۪ll be ready to go, I just want to make sure that I don̢۪t miss out because I only got an hour or two of sleep and nobody realized that I had arrived late the night before. I wonder if there is a limit as to how late I can check in to the resort.

Does anybody know if Nextel gets a cell phone signal in the area of the resort?

I just looked up the coverage on Nextel's website. No coverage in the area at all for Nextel.

Also, we'll make sure you're not left behind on the Horseshoe Bend excursion on Thursday.

Did you notice that Horseshoe Bend has 2 excursions. One on Thursday and one on Saturday. Enough were not going to be there until Friday night that I added it again on Saturday. Thursday is the only day that probably will have clouds, so I wanted to shoot some of the "topside" scenery with cloud.

I might still be "in"....if it's not too crowded. Will post when I decide...

Add one more to the list...

Okay after some quick calls and thinking, I am going to be there. Should be sweet. I've never been to this part of the country so it should be quite an experience.

I am taking off early next week and spending some time in the Rockies and Moab, but will be there Wednesday for the beginning of everything.

Glad to hear you're going to make it. That makes an even dozen by my count, a nice sized group. I've been readng travel guides and reviewing magazine articles on the area to help pass the time until I get there.

Not sure Iam going to make it down that far, but will be in the Grand Gulch (just NE of Lake Powell) and Canyonlands/DeadHorse Point area. I have about 4 friends and I that are planning to head down that way. Not sure they would want to pal around with all you, or you them. LOL If they weren't set on going to see a few certain things, then I would be there.
If I see a bunch of camera/tripod totoing people around, I will surely say HI!
I will be towing around my "newly built" Teardrop (I built it, not teardrop shaped tough), so if ya see a big black Ford F150 pulling a little camper, primered black, WAVE HELLO!! Looks like this.
Have FUN ALL!!!

I've been pulled into a mandatory meeting on Wednesday morning which I have to attend before I can leave Salt Lake. That means I won't be there until evening. Those that make it in the afternoon should get together and check out Glen Canyon Dam. I'll join you later.

Okay, I've run into some problems (a grad student's oral examination), but could still possibly come on the Saturday and Sunday. Yikes! I was really looking forward to this!

David, you just have to get your priorities in the right order. Your grad student has had 6 years or so to arrange the oral exam. We are there for only 5 days. So, what's the dilema? ;-)

We hope to see you for a least part of the time.
