voting for this challenge has presented some difficulties. I have thought of several ways to calculate each entry according to my criteria and am still unable to decide whether I believe it to be "grace". There are several shots that stand out and deserve credit but nonetheless i have decided not to vote on this challenge.

let the slagging begin.

there's still time. there's no rush. i know people are having trouble with mine in temrs of seeing the "grace" aspect of it because they've commented as much, but now others have commented with thoughtful expressions of how they do see the grace. i find this encouraging. remember, not all images rest on the surface. i know when i'm voting there are times when i'm in a bit of a rush and i go with my initial reaction, but later when i have time i'll go back and sometimes i'll see something more that was always there, it just needed more that 30 seconds to sink in...

... that is to say, it needed more that 30 seconds to come to the surface.

What is perceived as grace does seem to vary dramatically. For instance, I really can't see grace in quite a few of the entries, but assume the photographer does. When I haven't been able to see it I've left a note, and one person has already come back to me and I looked again and can see what they meant, and adjusted my vote accordingly.

With my photo I feel the grace is obvious and doesn't need further explanation. Several people have commented and love the grace. One person has then gone "I don't see any grace here".

I was left initially wondering if the person has brain damage ;) but later realise that if I can't see grace in several of the entries where the person who took it obviously has, then the reverse must naturally be possible (as I will readily assume that each author did see grace and not just put in a photo as it was cluttering up their HDD).

Perceptions vary, dramatically. Maybe there are also cultural/language barriers involved.

"Ahhh yes, Pedro, my donkey, just did a magnificently graceful shit, here, look at the photo!" Pedro and his owner are probably quite proud of his grace :)

Grace and many other of the challenges are open to interpretation and will be done so many and lots will not interpret your photo as you do. The thing that bothers me is when you receive a comment early on in the voting (with days left to go) and someone says, "I would have scored this photo higher but to me it doesn't meet the challenge." Then I send a return e-mail explaining how it does and then they send another e-mail saying that they agree, but never change their vote. Obviously they didn't mean what they said but felt the need to say something.
I myself now try to understand what the person means by their photo but truthfully some people just don't meet the challenge sometimes. And there are those that meet the challenge but the picture is of poor quality. I have had a hard time trying to figure out what is more important --the meeting of the challenge or the quality of the photo. Recently I have decided that the quality of the photo is more important even though I do consider the challenge at hand, but don't take off a lot for not meeting it.

alright, so i voted. i took my time and i voted. many good points made from other DPCers. surprisingly, after some time i was able to establish a clear idea on what i believe to be grace. although, i still see this challenge similar to the irony challenge in that there is a large grey area.

I agree with Jack there, there is a grey area here.

I didn't think there was before I saw all the pics, but having been through them I realised the term Grace reaches far wider than I had originally seen it.
