agreed ... it's almost too cold here to go out looking for wildlife ... watching the squirrels from my front window is sounding like a pretty good option right about now!

Helllo!

Sorry, been very quiet recently. Anyway been busy with me camera...here's my year so far...

Centered Composition
6.22

B&W Portrait
6.19

Best of 2006
6.77 (hoping for 90% here)

Battle of the Sexes
5.34 (ptui, well, you can't have everything)

Motion Panning
6.0 - thought this was better, oh well

As for wildlife...I'd love to do this too, but struggling to find any opportunities. But if you notice, the last one was done exactly a year ago and had some corkers (especially Alex's win), so it can be done...

Hmmm wildlife for me was a lost subject since the beggining, winter or summer I live in a city where the most wild thing you can found is a taxi driver... (hmmm... naaa, that`s VERY out of the box)... Anyway, how would anybody notice if I took the picture at a zoo?
01/18/2007 10:44:19 AM · #79
You'd probably get away with it if it didn't LOOK like it was at the zoo, regardless of whether it was or not...
Anyway, there's a surprising amount of wildlife in cities - mostly birds, admittedly, but just a little pond in a park could come up trumps...probably not gonna compete with the likes of goodman though. It's been known for peregrine falcons to make their homes at the top of tall buildings - see if you can find any of them harassing the pigeons!
Plenty of kestrels in London too

my main issue with the wildlife challenge is 'time' ... I'll be out of town this weekend and won't have much free time to go shooting ... squirrels are looking better and better ...

With two sub 5 performances...I had to take a break for a week. I'll probably be able to enter either the Entrance or Exit challenge. Wildlife ideas are escaping me. My Best of 2006 is sitting at a 5.48xx, but it was a personal entry. And my 8 of my 11 comments state whats wrong with the photo as something that i knew already and put in my photo description when i first entered the photo. (I love being right).

Hi everyone :) I hope you had a great weekend!.. I am just here to vent a little :P.. I am soooo happy the nude challenge came before the WPL starts! as there`s not a chance I`ll be entering that challenge... Then, I am being victim of the "literal challenge description voters" in the wildlife challenge. AAAAnd to finish, I need some therapy to get rid of my adiction to the unsharp mask and overal over process in my images :P that`s all... How are you doing?
01/22/2007 03:22:10 PM · #84
Haha Gaby. It's funny you mention the Unsharp mask...I just discovered it about two weeks ago and it's sooooo addicting. I have to remind myself that I don't need it on images that are already sharp.

I also have come to like a couple of my photos that editing has purposely over exposed the background.....What is it with me and enjoying bad technicals.

I haven't looked at the wildlife challenge yet (nor did I enter), but I figured they would be pretty literal with that challenge. The descpription was a little more wordier than usual (haha....wordier..is that a word?). I wish you luck..and hopefully it'll jump up in the next few days.

I'm just waiting to fail in the exit challenge. I might enter nude....highly doubtful...especially since I won't have a model by that time.
01/22/2007 03:39:05 PM · #85
Okay..my turn to vent.

I shot a model not too long ago and told her that she could choose 10 photos to have edited. And I swear she is choosing the most blurry or bad photos she can find. One of them I had to offer her a different photo because there was no way I could get a good edit out of the photo. Do any of you ever have that problem??

Weeeeell, were not you a model? :D:D:D:D jijiji... And yep.. there is never enough USM!

My wildlife just brake into 6 land!!!! (and it will go down.. BUT, I am expecting a good score withw Fill the Frame... (in case I havent done anything illegal)

--edit to add to your last post--- At my lighting class last year, my teacher told us about that, sometimes models choose the pictures they think they look better at, but as a photographer you should know what works, what will turn out ugly after pp, and what can turn out beautifully with the pp... At my model shooting last time, I made a pre-selection of the pictures I tought were the best, and then from them the model chose... She also saw all the outtakes but if she wanted one of those, I explain that the picture was not good because "x".

oooooohhhh. I forgot that I mentioned i modeled. Well...and there is already a nekkid photo of me in my portfolio. It all depends on whether or not my roommate is home or not this weekend. If he's home..there will be no nekkid photos (basically because I'm not shooting nekkid in front of a guy...and he'll laugh and ridicule me for years and years to come). If he's not home, i might consider it...of course there will be no body parts shown....

I also have another idea for nude, but it'll be out of the box which means either a great score..or brown ribbon.

I probably should have made my choices of which ones she could chose from. There were over 500 photos taken, so I would have had to go through all the photos first and then send her the contact sheet. But I wanted her to have the contact sheets before she left the shoot. Besides, I didn't figure out some of the editing techniques that i'm using now until a couple of weeks ago, so I didn't know what my potential was.

Hi! I recieved today this email:

The WPL board is back up. Please register and
have your teammates register.
This is where the WPL4 results will be posted
this season until the
"OFFICIAL" WPL site comes online.

Thanks,
SDW

Another mail:

At the WPL community board each team has their
own private thread that can
only be viewed, read, and posted by their team.
Teams are grouped under user
groups, you will find a link at the top of the
page. Make sure you (the
captains) and all your teammates click on the
usergroups and go to your team
then request to be added. I will receive your
request and place you as a
member of your teams usergroup. One you have done
that you will see your
teams private thread under the WPL4 section. Have
fun!

I am copy pasting the mails since I think that can explain the things better then myself (let`s face it, my english sucks!) so please, register on the community page (I think I only saw James_so)...

Tonights new challenge will be the first for the WPL season, please post on the threads whenever you are submiting for a challenge, to know if the team have all the submissions.

Our average score for last week was 6.1511, for the Best of 2006, Battle of the sexes, Match and Motion Panning challenges.

That`s all, good luck! see you around :)

OK, I think I managed to register etc...
Now can someone clear something up for me? Which challenges count, exactly? Is it just Member challenges, or Open challenges as well? If you enter more than one in a week, is it your best score that counts, or just the Members challenge one?
And which is the first challenge that counts...Personification?

Thanks!
Jim

Did they get rid of individual team threads in the forum? Where are we supposed to post if we entered or not?

The way I understood it is, yep, personification is the first challenge that counts for the WPL, but all the challenges after this count (open and member), (I still dont know how they will count special challenges, like the ones with the new rules). Every week, the top 4 scores of the team are counted to make the team average, but they only will take one score per user-the highest (so at least 4 of us have to enter one challenge a week, if only 3 of us enter, we`ll have a 0 to average, it doesn`t matter if a team member participate in two challenges)

Is it bad that I already know the two aspects of my Free Study that everyone is going to call out? It looks so much better with my copyright info.

Anyone enter personification yet?

Not yet... Still haven't found a decent idea...
02/01/2007 09:39:06 AM · #96
Dang...are voters getting angrier since the year started? I started out so well and my free study looks like it's searching for a brown ribbon....haha and I thought it was the best free study photo I've entered.

Well on to the next challenge (so glad free study doesn't count towards WPL).
02/01/2007 09:39:43 AM · #97
that's my issue also ... trying to find an idea ... I really hope that it doesn't take me til Sunday morning to think of one ...
02/01/2007 09:42:51 AM · #98
My ideas for personification are very low...I might just go for the good or bad challenge. Or try my one horrible idea at personification and hope to make up for it in good or bad.
02/02/2007 07:00:05 AM · #99
I have an idea for personification (or at least, have found a subject). I just need the right lighting this weekend...

Just wanted to let you know that the WPL4 is now
posted on the forums. To
view the WPL4 look at the top of the page (after
signing in) and you will
see a box field that says "added pages", click on
it and you will see the
WPL4 pages (Standings, Schedule, World League,
Global League, MVP 1-100, and
MVP 101-168. Please visit these links to make
sure it is working for you and
your team. Pass this information on to your
teammates so they will know
where to view the WPL4. Remember you must be
signed in to view the results.

And I still cant think of something for the personification challenge (I think I`ll have to watch some Disney movies to get inspired!)... But for sure I am submitting for good or bad... And my Free study, is just above 6, and I really hope it stays there.
