I have a Sigma EF 500 DG ST. I have it set on TTL mode and the camera on portrait. When I take the photo, it comes out dark, but, if I take another shot before it recycles, it comes out perfect. Can anyone help me with what's going wrong?

Weird...
I assume the second (correctly exposed) photo isn't using the flash at all? (ie: it dosn't fire)?
Sounds like TTL/ETTL isn't working...
When you use portrait mode on a 10D (or any Canon with the mode options) and have an external flash it will always set the shutter speed to 1/60th or faster.
So, if you have the flash on and it's ready to go, the shutter speed with be 1/60th of faster, and the apeture will be F/3.5 -F/5.6 depending on the lens you're using... Hold down the shutter button and look at the status in the on the LCD or in the viewfinder.
But.. When you turn off the flash, you're probably getting something a lot different, in a dark room, maybe 1/30th and 1/3rd of a stop up from the widest your lens can do (on your 50/1.8 it'd be F/2.0).
When the flash is re-cycling the camera ignores that it's there, and gets the exposure right on the ambient light.
Does your flash work in any other modes on the camera? I've not used a 500DG, but have seen good reports, so it should work. Does it have an ETTL mode, in Canon terminology TTL mode is for the older bodies (film ones mainly I think) and ETTL is what the 10D uses..
Hope all that helps..
Cheers, Chris H.

I just tried the portrait mode on my 350D and it works just fine, although I have the DG Super. Try and reseat your lens, that seemed to fix one of my problems. |

Tried the usual stuff?
- new batteries
- put flash in manual, full power, camera to manual mode, wide open aperture and 1/60, see if you get an overexposure (proves flash is working)
- Try Av, wide open aperture, flash on manual full -- probably should get overexposure (tests flash is working in Av mode)
- try Av wide open, flash on auto, ETTL or TTL (whichever the 10D supports), should get good image (tests flash is working correctly with ETTL mode.)
then refine your tests from there to get to testing in portrait mode.

try setting the camera to the "M" position and maually set the camera/flash.
If your flash is dedicated to the camera it should work in most modes.
some film flashes will not expose on digital correctly, The Sony/Minolta ststem is a case in point..
are you sure your flash is on the correct settings |
