I am scoring a lower average than for the previous 3 challenges I have entered.
So far 77 votes and only one comment, this also is unusual.
I can not recall whether Exposed, At Rest and Insects were all members challenges? But I wonder if the type of vote and the comment rate relates to which type of challenge it is.
They say that the average value during the first 48 hours reflects the approx final value, so it does look like this Grace entry will be my lowest overall out of 4 challenges entered. C'est la vie :~) |

Well, I have just finished voting on ALL the shots! I really don't see why some of the scores are so low. I really never handed out anything less then a 3. My average vote was somewhere around 5 or 6. Myabe I'm just a bit gracious. Haha, get it. I know, that was dumb. |

Just analysed the last 3 votes
1,2 & 6
Apart from a single comment very early on I would really love to know why people are giving me the votes they are!
If my submission is so poor an image and/or challenge meeting then why the heck can't they tell me. One thing I do look forward to is the end of voting so that the image appears in my portfolio then perhaps I can stimulate a bit comment in a forum thread.
Though it may not suggest Grace to many viewers I at least thought it was an average image.

Yes, but remember visitor, people here vote in different ways.
For instance:
Some people will vote on photo quality alone, and ignore if it meets the theme or not.
Some people will vote on photo quality, but then add or subtract 1 depending on how well it meets the theme.
Some people will give a photo a 1 automatically if they think it doesn't meet the theme.
Your score may be lower than the quality of the photo alone would suggest because of the third reason there.

Hi natator
Yes, I agree with your summary. I have put my point of view on voting on a few other threads.
It is just the lack of comments that is getting to me in this challenge.
I really welcomed the positive feedback I received on my other challenge entries. |

I have gotten one comment "nice" and I am at 4.1? I am disappointed. I wish people would realize this is not just point and shoot, there is alot of thought and preparation that goes into these shots, this is our expression of self, at least one point should be added for effort, I always add one point to my general score for the preperation of the shot and the effort that is clearly there, am I being too generous?

At least you're in the fours, I'm still pushing high 3's, with 85 votes. The bummer is that I wasquite proud of this one. Oh well, I can always do better I guess. No, I have gotten some encouraging comments, that's why I came here in the first place, to learn photography, so I guess I should expect lower cores for now. Wow, I feel better now. |

Natator, I guess you have right. With so many meanings of grace, some ppl think that if the shot doesn't fit his / her opinion about grace, it's bad. Actually I appreciate the subject if it meets ANY meaning of grace.
About my shot... well, I have gone after one common meaning of grace, and I made it simple, so everybody can understand it. Everybody COULD, to be proper. :-) After all scores you wrote I guess I am doing pretty fine with 4,45. I just think, after science (5,1) and all alone (nearly 5,5) this shot I have made for grace was technically much better than the other two ones.
We are looking forward an interesting challenge. I guess scores will be quite lower than expected, even for good shots. I guess the one who wins the challenge will receive something low 6s. I have now 102 votes and 3 comments. Every of them say that the shot's nice, meet the challenge, maybe thez would have done some thinks somehow else, but they like it and gave me quite high scores.
I really await some comments from the low-voter users, something like: "What does THIS have to do with grace?" "Ough that technic zou used was the biggest mistake of zour life." or something like that. It's really strange that everyone likes the photos, but the challenge has a really poor average score. I don't mind my 4,45, still very nice on this challenge. But maybe some verbal comments would tell me more I can learn of. |

I'm new here as well.. I've entered 4 challenges so far and the trend in my final score is going up from my first entry to the last. They're still in low 5's but i'm pleased with that. I'm having fun and learning a lot from the gurus here. I don't post a lot in forums but I read most the messages. The comments too that are left by the voters are really helpful.
Now with my Grace challenge, it started off at 5.8 but now sits at 5.111
After the voting is done i checked each entry just to compare how I voted a particular photo in relation to the others. In a lot of cases my votes are not far off the majorrity of the votes. Althoug there are a few when most people rated a photo high and I gave a low vote. In that case I would read the comments and see whether there was something that I didn't particularly noticed that deviated the score and try to learn from it.
A lot of you guys really have incredible talents and it's very inspiring. |

Not wishing to sound harsh but it is the responsibility of the photographer to convince people that it not point and shoot, if you feel that people assume it is then perhaps it is down to you.
Incidently, one point is added for effort - you cannot give an entry zero. |

First of all I have never seen a 1 on this site, or I have never given a one, so...if I did think it was a one, then I would vote 2. adding one for effort,(if it is obvious that the photographer did alot of preparation for the shot. And for the comment that "if people think its point and shoot, then its up to the photographer, you are right, either the photographer is lacking in their perception of their shot, or.... the person that is voting is lacking in their perception of the shot, hmmm. mind boggling. :)

My score for grace has been ranging from 4.2 - 4.6 - right now its at 4.42 .. I am not too surprised because my submission wasn't as good as I'd like it to be .. the highest I've ever gotten scored in a challenge is 5.4 for Urban theme. I think that's ok. I am just starting out so hopefully in time (and with a new camera) I will improve. In regards of this Grace theme, my votes have been high and low, all over the place. I vote on the quality, theme, and my liking of the overall visual appearance for each photo. |
