I have a Nikon D50 and would like to get a nicer flash than the built in flash. I can find the sb-80dx used for as little as $100 and the sb-800 for about $300 used.

I am shooting indoor sports with little or no lighting (i.e. airsoft), using as a fill light and of course anything else that requires a flash.

So, I guess my question is, which would be a better choice for me. will the sb-80dx do everything that I need until I upgrade? (i.e. Nikon D300)
Does anyone have a side by side comparison?

You forgot about the SB-600. Does TTL flash although not as powerful as the SB-800.

The sb600 may be a good for ya...
the 80DX is really not a good option for the D50 IMHO

Can you say more about why that is? I know for example that for the SB-28 it's not possible to do TTL. I found that shooting manual was quite a challenge and slowed down my photography too much. It'd be fine if I had time to plan out the shot, but that's usually not the case for me.

the sb 600 is basically the same as the 800 except it can not be the master flash like the 800 can and the 800 is slightly more powerful.

You definately would be better off with either of the two vs the 80DX...

I guess I have decided on the SB-600, due to the fact I have a gift card from x-mas. After a simple price match, it should only cost me about $120 bucks!

Thanks everyone!

You'll be very happy with it. I know I'm happy with mine and I've only had it a week!
