Does anyone know why my original raw files are being modified when I modify the copied version?

My workflow begins with loading my CF card via a card reader to an external drive then I view my raw images via photoshop 8 in the file browser to see which images I want to work on. They are then copied to my hard-drive using the default copy name.

I then go back to the photoshop browser and open the copied image from my hard-drive and if I make some adjustments to exposure or vignetting etc those changes will appear on the original raw file that is saved on my external drive?

I have tried using different names when I copy but when I open the original the changes will still be seen.

Can anyone help? please.

That's an interesting situation... I can assure you that the RAW files are not being modified, just settings. The settings are stored either in metadata associated with the file, or in a "sidecar" file. I wouldn't think that the changes in ACR settings would show up in the other copy. That seems like strange behavior.

OK I think I know what you are saying. I have just copied another image and changed the white balance and vignetting which I saved. These changes are then seen in the metadata under camera raw but do not appear in the metadata of the original or can be seen in the original in the photoshop file browser but when I double click that original it appears with the changes that have been completed on the copied version?

Once you edit your RAW file, you should have an associated file with an extension of ".XMP". This is where all the edits are stored, keeping your original RAW file "untouched".

At least this is how it works in my version CS2 (v9.0.2), Bridge (v1.0.4.6.104504), and Adobe Camera RAW (v3.6).

I'm using RAWShooters, it creates a folder with your settings named '.RWSettings' within the same folder their saved. Maybe yours does the same?

Added:Those settings wouldn't be available if I copied the shots into another folder which I opened.
