Well, the 5D is down and out once again. While down at a pond in my parent's backyard trying to shoot river otters I fell into the pond (walking over a tree to get to an island). The camera was in my winter jacket pocket and didn't go under but got splashed. I immediately took the battery out (it was off). When I returned to the house I surveyed the damage. It seemed only mildly wet (which I dried with a towel). I then decided it was safe to try. I slipped the battery in and it worked. Phew. However, two hours later when I grabbed it to go back down to look for the otters again I turned it on and it started acting funny. The LED display all lit up and then went out. Later I spotted a tiny bit of condensation under the top display.
I think it's fried. I'm going to give it a day to dry out and pray it rises from the dead, but it looks like another trip back to Canon.
I'm pretty darn bummed out at this point. |

I got my fingers crossed for you. But Canon is pretty quick about getting equipment back.

Holy crap Jason you are having some horrible luck with that camera. Sorry to hear about your misfortunes. Do you think Canon will be able to save it? And what if they can't?

I have a rider on my insurance which I'm 98% sure would pay for it. I'm not 100% sure how the insurance treats repairs instead of loss, so I have to find out about that in case the bill is $750. The rider is what makes me pretty nonchalant about how I use the equipment. I don't baby my stuff (although I do try to be reasonable). |

exactly that. It's an extra clause on your homeowners that specifically covers something expensive. It may wind up being the best $5/month I've spent. Especially since I've only spent $10 on it so far... |

I was thinking the same thing! Weather sealing is a beautiful thing, especially for chasing around otters in a pond. Not that I would know from personal experience, mind you... :o) |

Well, the update is it's fried. So I'll be calling Canon as soon as they open and sending it off. Hopefully I'll get it back in time for a backpacking expedition on the Olympic Peninsula. Good thing it doesn't rain and isn't wet out there... |

If your insurance pays off on this, you should just go ahead and buy a 1DMKII or 1DsMKII and get weather sealing. That 5d is bad luck for you.

I did pick up a new P&S the Fuji Finepix F30. The Canon S30 is now the "junk camera".
I could hardly justify the cost of the 5D, isn't the 1DMII like twice as much?
I was a bit surprised at how fragile the 5D was. Like I said, I don't believe it went under. I think it just got a fair amount of splash on it. When I went back to the house it was far from what I'd consider "soaking wet".

i wonder if you got water in the battery area when you took it out... with the door closed it wouldn't exactly dry right out. when you powered it up - the battery contacts were shorted...
i've pretty heavily soaked my old 300d and the 10d a couple times, while they were on with no issue.

You can pick up a used 1DMKII on the FM forums for around 2200-2500. Likely less then you paid for your 5D. I picked mine up in trade for my 30D and 1D and its in new condition off the FM forums. The 1DsMKII is what you may be thinking of is twice as much as the 5D but its also 16.7MP full frame camera.
