Anyone used this? Any reviews on it? Looks like a nice deal.

SP Systems Excalibur

I like the AC/DC option.

1. You have to be the rightful king to use it.
2. The carrying case is an extremely heavy boulder.

What has AC/DC to do with these flashes?

It can run from either household current or Battery power

That's what I'm thinking or at weddings where stringing electrical cables isn't convenient. Definitely cheaper than the Quantum heads.

More for the posed shots than anything.

I've been using SP Excaliburs since 2000. I have 3, the SP-6400, SP-3200 and a SP-1600. I've always found them to be great studio lights and feel they are the best kept secret of the best light for the buck here in the US. You get a lot more light for less money than the Alien Bees, but they are just as good in some areas and better in others.

For those starting out and need light stand and umbrella, their package kit gives an even bigger savings. Their ad-ons, softboxes, snoots, parabolic reflector, light stands, umbrellas, etc., are all really well priced and of very good quaility.

I've dragged mine across the US a couple of times and out on location a bunch of times and they have always stood up to the bumps and grinds I've put them through. They have worked in 90 degree room temps and even after a day of shooting, I've not really noticed a color shift or change in light output. In the time I've had mine, I've replaced the modeling light in the SP-6400 a couple of times and a fuse once. SP came out with the battery pack for the SP-1600 before Alien Bee did (now they have the battery pack for the SP-3200) and they also had the Ez-Up softbox first. They aren't made in the US and they don't get the marketing push that the Bees do, but they are a great set of lights for the beginner up to mid range photographer that needs studio lights. Although I've used mine for hours on end, I've not used them for day in and day out like a professional studio would use a set of lights, so I can't say how they would stand up to that. I think if someone needs lights for day in/day out, day after day type work, they are going to want some of the higher rated lights anyway.

I like them. And I recommend them as often as I can. The Alien Bee boys have gotten in a buzz a few times on other forums when I did, but that's the way it goes. :D

Thanks for the input Mike... :-) They definitely look like something to keep my eye on.
