I would appreciate it if you could give me loads and loads of comments (likes/dislikes) and criticism on these two photos - also what you would give it as a score if it were in a free study challenge - pretty much my first explorations into the digital photography world. :)

K here it goes...Just giving honest feedback... :)
I would give them both 4's if they were entered into a free study challenge and I think that would be one of the generous votes you would recieve. Some of my reasoning behind that is:
1. The subjects you have chosen will not draw a LOT of interest from the DPC crowd. In a free study I am expecting to see an even higher quality of image then a regular challenge because of how the free study gives you more time and does not restrict subject matter....
2. The photos are not high quality...have a good amount of noise in them and are a bit out of focus (scrooge photo)
3. The dwarf photo in the corner has some distracting elements in the corner.

The good news...photography is awesome in the fact that with a little bit of time and practice you will get SUBSTANTIALLY better. You will see amazing improvements and impress yourself.

The good points about your photos...
The dwarf picture has focus where it should be, on the dwarf...
These appear to be straight from the camera, and a lot of minor improvements can be made to these with basic editing...
Your creative...

My first challenge I entered here was....
It scored a 5.1
When I entered this image I was FOR SURE I was going to win the blue ribbon, in my first challenge! Lol, well obviously that did not happen, and looking back I now see all the flaws in that picture and understand why that never appeared on the front page. Keep taking more and more pictures and take a close look at the photos on this site that you consider great pictures...what do you like and what don't you like about them? Try to incorporate your likes into your own pictures and creat your own style.

What a thoughtful, kind critique.

wow, thank you very much for all that useful critique.

two things -

- using PS i purposely blurred everything on the "scrooge" picture except the sign. is that what you meant by out of focus? and if so, doesnt it improve the picture? (at least i thought it did)

- i am a pretty advanced PS user as far as making digital art, but i dont really know how to use it as far as improving photos. where can i learn more about this?

1 - The scrooge sign is very blurry

2 - there are a few thousand threads in the forums here on editing photos. Search.

Hi xxsprint,

I am going to reiterate advice given by Sunshine86, the best way to learn about digital photography is to hang out here at DPC, become a member, it is cheap instruction at only $25 per year, and absorb the wisdom that is available here.

One of the best ways to learn is to vote on challenges. You don't have to enter to vote, and you quickly learn what you personally like and don't like about images. After the voting is complete, I go back and see how the photos I rated did overall. Sometimes I am surprised that images I loved ended up in the middle of the "pack" and images I rated low end up in the top 20. Then I take the time to try and figure out why my ratings were so "off" the norm. Usually it isn't just my taste, but there was something fundamental about the photo that I missed or over or under rated. This has been a valuable learning experience and has shaped my eye for good and so-so photography. I also read the comments left by more experienced photographers and learn through others images as well as my own.

Regarding PS - There are several tutorials here on DPC about using PS to enhance your photos. This is a good place to start as it will also ensure you stay within the editing guidelines. One thing I have learned at DPC is that the voters expect solid fundamentals of photography in order for an image to do well in a challenge. You might brush up on the basics of photography (rule of thirds, depth of field, etc.) to prepare to enter your first challenge.

Most of all, the best thing to do at DPC is to jump into the proverbial water. Just start entering challenges, ask for constructive feedback (as you already have) and try to apply that feedback to your next round of images. People here are very helpful and really care very deeply about other members. It is a great community to belong to.
