How much of a difference is there going to be between these two lens?
Is the first one with the "Macro" really worth $100 more then the second lens?
I could see paying more if the magnification on the macro was 1:1, but it's not.

A was really looking forward to buying a Sigma 24-70mm f/2.8, but the main problem is it's enormous size and weight, It would not fit in my camera bag :D. But besides that it is a nice lens, it's sharp and has nice colors.
For my self I will probably buy a Sigma 17-70mm F/2.8-4.5, because it's smaller and lighter and has a wider angel of view.

It looks to me like the 28-70mm version is just an older version of much the same lens. The "macro" designation on this lens is a bit of a joke. There's little difference in the max. magnification from the 28-70mm version, which did not carry the "macro" designation.
The filter size on the 24-70mm version is a whopping 82mm; any good filter to fit that beast is going to set you back some change. Not that 67mm is cheap but...
Bottom line, if the 4mm at the wide is not important, and you can verify that the 28-70mm version is optically good (I suspect it is, especially on an APS-C cam) then it seems like the 28-70mm version may be a good bet. |

keep in mind the 4mm extra on the 24mm adds almost 10deg to the angle of view. sometimes this difference is overlooked when chosing wide angle lenses. two 17mm lens might not have the same angle of view.
