Am thinking of buying a camcorder for around 200-250 UK pounds (read $500). I've seen several models but wondering if this fine dpc community can help with advice/experience?

Basic needs,

Decent resolution
Simple editing (propriety or otherwise)
10x Optical zoom+
Easy to use
Lightweight

NTH

Remote release/control
Still image facility
Image stabilisation

Thanks in advance you good people :)

I have a Sony Digital Handycam. It was under $500 and meets your needs. I like it a lot.

I have a Sony Handycam HC-24 which I'm very happy with. It also fits your requirements.

I'd also say check the prices on the newer ones that can record directly to an internal hard disk, it'll save messing about with tapes.

Thanks for the sony idea, am not sure I like the memory sticks though. I've also been looking at JVC hard drive models - any thoughts on these? beats carrying disks around. Sooo many to chose from, its scary!

I bought a Sony that records to Mini DVDs. About as basic as it gets.

20X Zoom
Image Stabilization

I just wanted something to record the kids concerts and stuff on. We already had a Hi8 Camcorder but don;t own a VCR.

I would rather carry disc around then run out of hard drive space on vacation.

txs Rex though I doubt I'd use 20-30gb in one trip (but would have the laptop if needbe). I may just wander into town tomorrow and see what they want to sell me lol.

I should probably mention that since my wife got the Fuji F30 the poor Handycam has been sitting all lonesome on the shelf...

It appears the video mode on the P&S is ideally suited for taking short 2-3 minute clips, with reasonable quality and sound. And it's really easy to upload the clips to the PC (easier and faster than having to do video capture over firewire with the Handycam)

The only problem is the memory card needs to be bigger! - I didn't realise she'd be using the P&S mainly for video when I bought it.
