hi - a couple of q's - maybe someone could help me out

1. I am just getting used to using adjustment layers and then painting on the layer mask - is it possible to do thisd when appl;ying filters - eg gaussian blur ?

2 having drawn on a layer mask is it possible to copy it so that it can be used on anothr layer without having to redraw the whole thing ?

3. Can the layer mask be converterd to a regular selection such as you might make with a lasso tool ?

I have played about with the programme and checked my cs2 for dummies but i can't seem to find the answer

many thanks in advance

Your timing is perfect. Download the new CS3 beta and you'll find that you can do exactly that! (look into smart objects)

Yes. Right click and add to selection. If the other layer has a layer mask, delete it. Then click the add layer mask button and it will immediately use the existing selection.

Yes, see above.

1. copy the background layer, apply the filter of choice. Add layer mask-->reveal all-->paint with a soft black brush to remove the filter effect from where you want (white will re paint the effect). What it really does is add/remove the mask.
2.To answer both 2. and 3. the mask is automaticly made into a alpha channel which you can load as a selection and then save if you wish.
Channels-->load channel as selection (lower left button).
If you copy the masked layer, the layer mask follows with it. If you wish to apply the same mask somewhere else I suppose you could load the selection and in use it in quick mask mode to recreate the mask.

I hope I understood you questions correctly and was able to help.

To a great extent, a "mask" and a "selection" are the same thing. All masks can be converted into selections, and vice versa. If your active layer is one that contains a mask, you can click on "selection/load selection" and the default is "[active layer] mask"; clicking that will load the mask as a selection. You may then open a new layer, or for that matter click on any already-existing layer, and the selection will be there.

I am not sure what you mean by question 1, but if you have selected/masked an area, when you apply filters they will only have an effect on the selected/masked area. Typically I do this by duplicating the layer I want to filter onto, loading the selection/mask, then applying the filter. I can then try different layer modes on the filter, and fade its opacity to suit, or discard it altogether by trashing the layer.
