A word on work flow:

Given Jeb's latest issues, I present to you, free of charge, a word on workflow.

If your computer doesn't have a nifty slot into which you can stick your memory card, go forth and buy yourself a card reader. They aren't expensive. Stick the card in it, connect it to your computer via a USB port, and download your pictures.

Do NOT use your camera's software to download your pictures to your computer. When you connect the reader, or stick the card into the computer, simply open it as a drive - it'll look just like any other drive, with a bunch of files showing. Copy all those files to a folder on your hard drive. I label mine with the date I shot the pictures, and a brief word or two as to what it was I was shooting (cats, zoo, trees, etc).

Now once you have your files on your computer, if you WANT to, you can use your camera's software to transfer them as well, or any other software you want, if that's what you're comfortable with.

If, like me, you use the files that you've copied over directly from the card, then before you do anything to a file, duplicate it and work from the duplicate. I will fire up Adobe Bridge and look at everything that way. I'll even click on a jpeg or a raw to open it in CS just to see it. But if I plan to edit it at all, I "cancel" the operation (just in case!), then duplicate the file, then open the duplicate and work on that.

While I brought this up because of the DPC rule for originals, it's more simply a good practice to get into. I seriously regret when I first started playing in digital that I didn't keep untouched originals. I edited, I resized, I saved as jpegs. Nothing I can do about that now.

(If any of the above doesn't make sense, just ask. It's early...)

Just a quick one to say many thanks for my "Yappy Award" you all honored me last year, and now I have it proudly displayed on my profile page, with thanks also mentioned from "Team Suck"..

I personally like to thank posthumous for answering my request, in making sure I did receive this award that and I personally value, re my commenting.

Actually I thank you all, each and everyone of you, at "Team Suck Headquarters".

Yep, as it turns out, I am. Hope he doesn't mind a truck. Another one of those things I've learned in Germany - if you drive a Ford Ranger (and I may be the only person here who does), NEVER get in the left lane on the autobahn. I will venture briefly into the middle lane if it's three lanes to get past the big trucks going up hill, but once I get past whoever I'm passing, I get right back over to the right side.

The Germans are acknowledged world champions at using multi-lane roads. The rules are actually simple and obvious, but only the Germans seem able to follow them. If, say, the traffic rules state that you should drive on the left hand side of the road, as in most states in the world, or on the right hand side of the road, as in the states that make the most fuss about themselves in the world, then the correct interpretation of this rule is literal. What this means in practice is that you drive in the right hand lane of the available number when driving on the autobahn. If there is a vehicle in front of you impeding your progress then you can use the lane to your left in order to pass that vehicle. Like I said, obvious. I think the problem comes when you've passed the impeding vehicle and see that there's another one a few hundred meters up ahead, so why not just stay in the same lane instead of weaving in and out? The - er - 'obvious' answer is because you may be impeding the vehicle behind.

Rule one: Stick to the right.

There's a little convention there (as I recall) whereby if you pull back into the inside lane and the vehicle behind follows you in there, in order to allow yet another following vehicle to pass the lot of you, then
a) you indicate right before steering into the right-hand lane (obviously)
b) you indicate left before pulling out of it again (also obviously)
c) if you decide not to overtake this time, then you briefly indicate right to let the vehicle behind you know that you no longer wish to drive in tandem and they can pull on by (less obvious)

Rule two: Use your mirrors and indicators like Billy-O, in order to communicate (2-way, right?) with your fellow road-abusers.

Construction of autobahns was part of what earned Adolf a front-page splash in Time magazine as man of the year 1938. You didn't invent the motor car - they did.

Rule three: Learn from the Germans.

Sorry if that all sounds (or is?) like patronising put-down. Obviously you have to learn the 'driving culture' wherever you are. In many ways, Germans come over as irritatingly boring, bless 'em - but boy, can they get things right :)

Ahh dialup. Those were the days. I would suggest trying to zip up the file in winzip or similar, but my experience (from Canon RAWS) is that they don't compress much anyway.

So you're a bit stuck. 6MB is a lot for dialup lines. Could easily run into a few hours if you're unlucky.

Have you got a friend with broadband access? Maybe you could put the file onto a cd or memory stick and upload it on their computer?

Just to add to what Mel said about altering of originals, I copy mine across from memory card onto the PC using a card reader. Then I split them out into two directories - one has RAW files, the other keeps the JPEGs. If I need a quick preview, then I'll use windows slideshow directory view to preview the JPEGs, this way neither RAW nor JPEG will be marked as changed. Sometimes even if you just open a file in an editor without saving the editor will change the EXIF, so I find it's not worth it.

Before editing / using a RAW, I copy it and call the copy "WORKING COPY OF ......." so that I always know which one has been opened.

Some notes about raw image quality.

Most dSLR Cameras that have a raw image quality option have 2 choices in storing files on the camera's memory card.

For Jeb's benefit, I'll use a Nikon D70s as an example. For image quality you have 5 choices, 1) NEF(raw), 2) JPEG fine, 3) JPEG Normal, 4) JPEG Basic, 5) NEF+JPEG (Basic).

When you take a photograph if you use NEF(raw), 1 file is recorded to the memory card.

When you take a photograph if you use, NEF+JPEG, 2 files are recorded to the memory card. The filename will be the same with 2 different extensions. The raw file will have a .NEF extension; the JPEG file will have a .JPEG extension. The NEF file is approximately 5.0MB in size; the JPEG file is approximately .8MB in size.

I would make a copy of the NEF file and work on that in photoshop. Only store the JPEG file-you will not be making any changes to it.

In dpchallenges, the advantage to having this extra JPEG file is that, if you have to submit a proof of your photograph, it is acceptable to send in the JPEG file as long as you have not altered it. It has all the original camera EXIF data stored within the file. You still should not alter the original raw file either.

In digital photography, it does help to be a nerd. Now if I could get the other side of my brain to work.

I hadn't thought of that! I might be able to do that at the library....I could take the kid's laptop and up it from there!

Okay.....where I'm lacking is in knowing how to get the jpeg from a RAW file....do I just open it and convert one and save the original at the same time?

This is like learning how to ride a bike I guess. It is difficult to start and those that have known how to ride for a long time forget how to explain it.

Nikon D70s Menu- Setup menu - Image quality - you will be shown the 5 options that I mentioned. In the manual, read the section about image quality and size.

What option is your camera set on?

Options:

a) If your camera was set to the raw option when you took the photograph, only 1 file was created. You would be required to submit the .NEF (raw) file.

or

b) If your camera was set to the raw+jpeg option when you took the photograph, 2 files were created. You would be able to submit the .JPEG file.

What you cannot do is use option a) to take a photograph and then create a .JPEG from the .NEF file and submit the .JPEG as proof.

Oh, you are *SO* my hero!!!!!

I found the setting in the menu.

Ya know, I can't believe how much I have learned here.

When I got my camera, I was kinda PO'd at the salesperson because they recommended that I get this 1 GB chip.

I fired up the D70s for the first time and saw that I had availability of 622 pics.

I thought, great, this guy sold me a bill of goods on the chip.

Well then, FOUR months later when I went to a basic DSLR seminar, I found out I was shooting in normal. Pic quantity went down to 291.

Then.....I started shooting in RAW....down to 182.

RAW + Basic?

157......I'm gonna need a bigger chip!

Gawd, I'm so at the bottom of the learning curve!!!!

Anywho.....I also found that this makes downloading the image (RAW + Basic) easier 'cause it uses Windoze Camera and Scanner wizard and dumps it right into My Pictures where I can look at the jpegs or open CS2 and view the RAW files.

You guys are awesome!

Yeah.....I guess I'm gonna have to haul the kid's computer to the library.

Now I have to firure out how to put in on a disc and transfer it.

I'm AFRAID!!!! (whimpers.....)

If you have a card reader, then original files that have been transferred from camera to hard disc can be transferred again to a memory card via the card reader. You can then take card and card reader to some place (friend? neighbour? local library? kid's school? work? internet café?) where you can upload via broadband.

Just a thought.

Okay....I dunno what a card reader is.

I did burn the file to disc, took the disc and dumped the file into the kid's computer, and it's in there, so I'm taking it to the library where they have wireless.

Thanx!

No sweat. - Card reader.

It may be a UK term, as a lot of UK sites came up when I searched it.

In any case, e.g. Amazon'll do you for one without you having to re-mortgage all of the house.

Get one. You avoid having to use the camera's software (and hardware) when transfering files.

Incidentally and if you look for one of these magic card readers now, the card for your D70 is CF - Compact Flash

Dear me. Seems like there would be a lot more future opportunities for a doctor than a spy.

The idea of being a spy can seem glam, but it's really not. I'll keep this short, but part of the reason my husband and I moved away from DC is that I turned down a chance to be just that. <>. I was working for the Department of Defense in a field totally unrelated to spying (policy and program analysis), and someone in my organization recommended me to the NSA (National Security Agency) based on the fact that I speak what's known as a "Tier-4" language (Japanese) in terms of difficulty, and evidently had shown some kind of promise in learning things very quickly. (They must have been the delusional ones!) Anyway, NSA started recruiting me very hard with what seemed like a dream job where I would have been based in Honolulu with a lot of travel to and from Tokyo. The job, though? Counterintelligence aimed at my own co-workers. In other words, my job would have been to suss out disloyalties via friendships that were completely false on my end. I suspect I would have been moved out of the Tokyo route very quickly and into a Farsi language course and into the Middle East, as well, as I can't imagine there's much future in Japanese counterintelligence. Anyway, turning down that job in no way affected my position at DoD, but I realized eventually I was going to get sucked in if I stayed around.

And to think I didn't even enter the James Bond challenge :-)

Wow, noraneko, what a job - I've actually done similar work in the past and may in fact be getting back into it. I love what I do wbut there is so little money in it.

BTW liked your comment on my procrastination - yep, they are real things I did (and didn't) do!
Anyhoo, here's my latest inexplicable scores:

Procrastination - 4.9 something and Song Titles continuining to bmb at 5.1.

Now off to catch up on the thread, amybe vote, and submit Battle.

Well, they don't exactly provide training for Doctors, lol. She was supposed to be a nuclear medical technician. Right now, the civil field is paying on average $35/hr for this type of job. She figured she'd put her 4 years in and leave with a good job.

With the special ops, she would do 2 years of training, then be sent to college for 4 years at their expense and leave with a degree in criminal science or something like that (I don't remember the exact title she gave me) at which point she could join the CIA or become a cop. I don't know if they put the spy thing in her head or she just associated it with the CIA. Of course, in my mind, I believe they won't let her go quite so easily after all that.

Edit to add: What do you think of this Deb? You're in the service, are they good to their word on these things. They are also using a much larger signing bonus as an enticement.
