Hey, if you're interested in going for real prizes, try submitting photos to JPG magazine. If they choose your shot, you get $100 and a year's subscription. Plus, some themes are sponsored. For example, I'm in "embrace the blur" and if it's published, I win a lensbaby, a special lens with interesting blurring/focusing abilities. Of course, I'll need to get a DSLR to use it. ;)
Interesting differences between there and here:
- there, you must submit full-size images at least 2200 pixels on the long side because they're publishing a real, print magazine
- there, they don't want highly manipulated images. Sort of similar to basic rules here.
- there, the pics are chosen through some combination of voting and editorial discretion. Voters only vote "yea!" or "nope."
Anyway, the URL is //jpgmag.com
I'm over there as levyj413 (shocking, I know).

If you're using them for challenges, make sure you keep a copy of the original RAW untouched, without opening it in anything. Even if you open without saving some programs will tag the image with their information, making it useless as a proof. |

Jeff, thanks for the link. You know I'll have to try it out... :-) You and I are serious internet photo addicts. We could probably start our own 12-step program, except it might interfere with my browsing time. |

Free study is holding steady just below 5.5.
That's the only photo I have just now. No entries in for this week. |

Probably a fair bit of voting is actually going on, it's just that it's spread amongst a larger number of shots than normal. Even the open challenges this time seemed to have masses of entrants. |

I just posted this comment in another thread. What does Team Suck think of this:
If there are 450 entries in Free Study and only 150 vote on your image, that means that 300 entrants don't even vote. They take the easy way out and just enter an image and let everyone else do the work.
Why not say: From now on, FREE STUDIES are ONLY for people that have given more comments than they have recieved. If you want to enter a free study, get your comments up.
The image that I am entering in BO 2006 is being entered now because the free study back in April was that way and I didn't give more comments than I received. I got my comments up because I didn't want that to happen again.
And while you're commenting, you might as well vote!

I've got a new 3rd best going in free study: 6.5 :)
I'm getting a surprisingly low score in centered comp: 5.6. But since that was the main contender for entry in free study, I'm glad I made the right choice!
I'm in Best of 2006 with a shot that I'm crossing my fingers will yield a new personal best or 2nd best. It certainly got a warm reception from the folks who saw it in my portfolio, so here's hoping the rest of the voters agree!
I'm in procrastination, although I'm waffling between two versions with different amounts of contrast.
And I'll be in song eventually.

i understand where you're coming from, bob, but that's not realy fair.
i now have 400 more comments than i have given. i do try to comment, and think i succeed certainly on those i give low scores, but there's no way i can get the score even. i'm sure there are many like me - with deeply hectic lives etc.

I have a couple of possible entries for Procrastination, title-dependent even though I shot 'em with the challenge in mind. None is good enough to really enter, though - truly boring shots. I'll wait until the last minute to decide if I want to enter one.
I'm using one of Jeff's ideas for the Song challenge. |

No, it doesn't. It might mean that at least 300 people who entered didn't vote on every photo in the challenge, but that's about the limit of what you can say. Every entrant may well have voted on, say, 1/3 of the entries.

If that's the case, then there should be 450 votes for 450 entries, or close to it, because people that entered other challenges should be participating in the vote for free study also.
What about the people that don't enter challenges and still vote. What I'm saying is that between all the challenges and all the people that vote who are not in challenges, why is there only 150/450 votes cast for free study. Because it's easy to simply not vote. Yes, it eats up a lot of time.
So why not give the people that vote and comment something special in return for their work. This could be done just for the free study.
BTW, I'm not trying to start a riot here, just something that would possibly make people vote or comment more. I realize that everyone can't but you can't tell me that a lot of people aren't just lazy. I don't vote on everything but I do TRY to vote 100% on the challenges that I enter. |

Some people do not vote in a challenge that they are in, not because they are lazy but because they feel that voting in a contest that they are in is not fair. I have had several comments from people who state they will not vote for that reason.

This is just a thought that I had because I was penalized for the same reason. On April 29, after the Michigan GTG, I was going to enter the following free study here. Then I found out that I couldn't because I hadn't given more comments than I had received.
I just didn't want that to ever happen again so I started voting and commenting more. |

How many of fellow Suckers vote in contests in which you participate? It depends for me. If I'm feeling at all emotional about how my photo is doing, I either don't, or I wait. Usually toward the end of the contest, my emotional investment has worn off, and I feel I can vote without prejudice. However, I've never been in ribbon contention. If I had a photo above 6.8 (would have to be of pigs flying, I know) I would probably hold off on voting. You? |

My personal approach - I try to vote 100% in every challenge I enter, and try to comment on 20% of each challenge in which I vote. Why do I vote the ones I enter? Because I have a pretty good idea what kind of things to look for in that challenge, seeing as how I spent time trying to come up with something for it. I do think I'm fair. Since we don't know how it'll finish (and I suck at voting, apparently, given the ones I pick as top scorers rarely finish at the top), I can't really say "how come that's scoring so much better than mine?" while I'm voting. I usually still like my picture when I'm voting too, but I'll often see a lot of entries that have interpreted the challenge alot better than I did. In a way, that also helps me understand MY score in a particular challenge.
Them's my two cents worth. Spend 'em as you see fit.
A note - given radically sporadic internet access over the past couple of months, I didn't get to all the challenges I entered recently. I did not, for instance, even get started in the Free Study this month. I did however get Fireworks and Fences this week once my DSL kicked in. |

Melethia been meaning to ask you - where, exactly, in Germany are you located? I've been a couple of times and loved it. Too bad you weren't able to pack me in your suitcase, LOL :-) |

I'm living in a small town called Hochheim, which is across the river from Mainz, just down the road from Wiesbaden, and not too terribly far from Frankfurt. |
