This seemed like as good a place to ask as any...I was given a Canon Powershot S3 IS for Christmas (yay!) and I'm looking forward to growing into it. But a question for those who have one - today when I turned it on, both the LCD viewing screen and viewfinder are black. I can pull up the menus and such without a problem, and it will take a picture, but the picture is also black. It's like I'm shooting with my lense cap on, but I'm not, I promise. :) I haven't dropped it and have gone through the settings again and again trying to figure out what I did. Any clue as to what I did and what I need to do to change it???

Fortunately, this model knocks off the lens cap when it boots.

-If it is not defective, it is possible you are shooting on Manual settings which make it impossible to capture a picture -- e.g. f8, 1/2000 sec, ISO 80 indoors ... what you see when you depress the shutter 1/2-way should be what you capture.

-Try re-formatting the card in the camera.

-Try fresh(er) batteries; make sure they are in the correct orientation.

My guess would be that the settings are set to shoot a dark picture. Try putting it in auto and see if you get anything on the LCD or the view finder.

Okay, I've fiddled with the manual settings and put it in auto with no change. I'll try new batteries tomorrow (don't have any new ones here!) and will also reformat the card then. Maybe that will take care of it...

Did that too. Went through the cycle several times, without change. Gah - I miss my camera!!
