I used to own the very highly rated Nikkor 12-24 f4DX, but sold it because of severe hot spotting when shooting infrared. I received my Christmas present to myself yesterday, the Tokina 12-24 f4. I was lucky that it was actually nice outside for the first time in weeks, and was able to get about a 100 or so test shots. I must say that I'm overly impressed. The build quality is great, but it was the image quality that really surprised me. Sure it has a little more CA than the Nikkor, but PS RAW took care of it easily. The lack of a Silent Wave Motor (USM) is irrelevant with a wide like this, and the lens focuses quickly & silently. I even like the push-pull of the focusing ring to go from manual focus to AF even though I though I'd hate it. I'd definitely give the Tokina a serious look.

And you're happy with the quality of the Sigma? The only lenses I own so far are all KM.....partly because I've been unsure of quality in 2nd party lenses.

Your 18-70 is a KM. :D

I use Sigma and Tamron (prefer the Tamron SP glass), but they certainly seem well built. Tamron has a 6 year warranty!

I know my kit lens is KM :-) That's what I was saying....I've been paranoid about 2nd party, so all I've bought is KM so far :-)

I knew you knew. Hey, that's fun to say! :D Just pulling your leg a bit Elizabeth. :P

Another possibility, depending on your desired results, is panoramas.

If the situation permits, you could use a tripod and stitch together 2 or more to for a wide coverage, without the fisheye effect.
