Apparently, there is a new gym law that prohibits the use of camera phones. Invasion of privacy or some foolishness like that. I don't have one of those phones.

Then I remember seeing a late night talk show on some news channel interviewing a kid that started a website dedicated to camera phone photography. He claims it's art. Others claim it's invasion of privacy.

Thoughts?

I don't think you are very private if you are in public.. but, at a private club where you have to pay to belong they can make their own rules.

Plus, I believe the issue is more around taking photo's in change rooms, etc. And, even though it's a public place (of sorts), I guess you have a reasonable expectation of privacy when getting changed. Just like a "public toilet" isn't really "public".

As you said - in a private club they can make pretty much any rule they want since you have no "right" to be there.

The gyms don't care about you taking pictures, they care about getting sued because you are taking pictures.

The gyms care because it is easy to take pictures without getting noticed. Sneak photographing people in gyms (or on other private premises) might not be illegal, but is generally immoral. Hence, they don't want you to.

Same thing goes for courts in the UK. If the judge thinks you are taking a picture, when you are really just sending a message, you could be in deep shit (taking pictures in court = contempt of court = serious fines)
