hello,

i recently have been approached by a friend's mother who has been following my work for sometime now, and she purchased her first SLR and lenses (Nikon d80). although i didn't hold that against her (just joking), she's wanting me to give her photography lessons, and i'm wondering what a good price for this would be. i'm very open to suggestions. she's wanting to know the basics, as well as something to take decent pictures of her daughter's boyfriend at baseball games...he plays for the university in my town.

i'm open to any suggestions on price, whether it's a weekly or monthly charge. once a week, me giving her assignments to shoot and then show me next time we meet and going from there.

thanks so much. enjoy your holidays / new years :D i know i will, my 70-200 2.8 IS USM came in today ;)

i took my classes at a local community college. See if yours offers one, figure out the price by week, and that is one way to come up with some kind of number. Then you can tell her what the cost would be per meeting and she can decide if she wants to do it (or negotiate even).

you can charge an hourly rate something like $50 to $60 an hour.

If you have a local college, see if you can find out what the going rate for tutors is. That will give you an idea of the 'market value' for your services -- adjust for relationship with 'student' if you wish and set the price accordingly.

Do it for fun. I teach Photography and Photo-Editing as a volunteer at a local High School and watching them learn is well worth the time and effort I put out. I also teach corporate clients and tutor, for that I charge $45 - $80 per hour, depending on the client.

Or find something you can trade for. It could be a new flash unit, maybe a printer for the computer, whatever works. It's a little more personal than money. Unless you WANT to make a business out of this. But if you do, it's still tough doing business with your friend's mom...

I teach a beginning photo class -

Started teaching it for continuing ed - they paid me $50 a class with 15-30 students. The students paid $80 for 5 2 hour classes.

Now I teach it on my own, I've been through it enough that I have my curriculum down, and I think we cover a lot more than the cont. ed class, so I charge $100 for the same 10 hours (include a fieldtrip with me and three students for the final class, I'm at the park all day, they rotate through in 2 hour shifts.

I'm also available through the week via IM and email for questions.

Hope that helps.
