Is it okay in advanced editing to duplicate an image, edit it some, and then copy it back onto the original and changing the blending mode??

Yes, it usually is. The only time it is not is if you use it to remove, move, copy, etc., elements within the photo.

Thanks, but now i have another question. The original file was sideways and when I transferred the photos to my computer, I rotated the images the right way and saved them that way. Although I don't expect a validation request...if one was requested and the original was rotated (I always do my editing on a different copy) will Admins not accept that??

What software was used to transfer and rotate? Some software does invalidate the original as an original, whereas some just stores the settings exteral to the file, and thus leaves the original intact.
I'd suggest opening a ticket under Help>Contact, in the "General Inquiry" category, and attaching the rotated original. Specify which software was used in the text of your message. We'll review the file, and let you know if it is still a valid original.
