My camera, Canon 1D MkII, has a firewire cable out for direct connection to computer. My console puter has a firewire port. However, my laptop only has USB 2, and I was hoping to be able to use the camera tethered to my laptop for a series of time-lapse shots.

Does anyone know if there are any conversion/connection possibilities for adapting the firewire connection to a USB 2 one?

Merry Christmas everyone!

The best bet would be a FireWire Cardbus adapter. They are readily available, though not dirt cheap; the resulting connection would be quite fast.

Good idea! I'll look for one of those.

Something like this would be what he's talking about. They aren't too bad in price.

I found this one that looks like a good deal. Refurbished, but 1/3 the price. I've always had really good luck with refurbished products, which are usually returned in perfect condition from a user who is confused/mistaken.

Now that does look like a good deal. Adaptec is a good name, and I agree that refurbed equipment can be, most often is, as good as new.

Your 1DMKII has both a USB and a firewire port on the left side of the camera. Mine came with both cables. I can assume if you bought yours new yours did as well. If not the cable is available on the net. Your users manual should give you the part number. IFC-400PCU

Edit to add link to B&H cable listed for that part number.

Especially if it has no moving parts.

Thanks for pointing that out Matt. I bought my MK II used, and the only things that didn't come with it were the USB and Firewire cables. However, after checking your link, I find that the USB cable for my old 300D is the same as the one for the MkII, so I'm in business! Funny thing is I looked at the connection ports on the MK II and didn't see the USB port clearly...thought it was some sort of printer-out port. DUH!

Remember though that the USB port on the Mark II is USB 1 and as such would be painfully slowwwwww for tethered shooting. The Firewire PC card would be a faster alternative IMHO. :)

It would be painfully slow for just about everything... Definitely go for the firewire...

Thanks again everyone! Yes, USB 1 does suck! So it looks like the firewire buscard is back in the mix.

His main intent as I read it was timelapse photography. Seems to me speed wouldnt really be an issue. And since his cable is already in his possession seems like a win/win for him. Although what do I know I've never done time lapse.

Many Canon cameras (like mine) come with built-in time-lapse capability (look for "Intervalometer" in the manual).

I believe that is a feature found more on P&S cameras than dSLRs.
